Three months after Volodymyr Zelensky won a landslide victory in Ukraine's presidential elections, the comedian-turned-politician is facing his first major political test in Sunday's snap parliamentary vote. The newly-elected president is seeking a strong mandate for his Servant of the People party to have a shot at delivering on his promise of transforming the war-torn country by tackling pervasive corruption and implementing reforms. The vote was initially scheduled for October 27, but Zelensky dismissed the parliament in his inauguration speech on May 20, calling for a snap poll as he did not have representatives in the legislature. Without the support of the powerful parliament, the president would not be able to pass any reforms or change the cabinet of ministers he inherited from former President Petro Poroshenko. In a country seemingly tired of mainstream politicians, Servant of the People has been strategically-packed with inexperienced … [Read more...] about What’s at stake in Ukraine’s parliamentary election?

This opinion piece was written by Dr. Ionas Aurelian Rus, Associate Professor of Political Science at the University of Cincinnati Blue Ash College (USA). The opinion does not necessarily represent the opinion of the editorial staff of Moldova.org. *** The conventional wisdom is that the U.S. presidential election of 2020 will be won by the Democratic presidential candidate, most likely Joe Biden. I will also discuss some insights from Ohio. The most typical “fundamentals” are favoring Trump, for example, prosperity and possibly peace. Yet Trump has also often not been wise or even rational as president, and a majority of the voters indicate that they do not … [Read more...] about The 2020 U.S. Presidential Election Is a Toss-Up

Five years since the Euro-Maidan and the Revolution of Dignity fervently rejected systemic corruption and graft, Ukrainian politics continues to experience enormous influence from local oligarchs. In this environment, Ukraine’s presidential election campaign is in full-swing, with the vote scheduled for March 31. To date, 59 declared and 28 registered candidates are vying for the country’s top position in government (Ukrayinska Pravda, February 1). On January 29, incumbent President Petro Poroshenko declared his intention to run for a second term. The Kyiv-based Rating company found his popular support at only 15.1 percent among decided voters, thus putting him in third place. The first- and second-place finishers in the poll were popular Ukrainian comedian Volodymyr Zelensky and former prime minister and current leader of the Batkivshchyna party Yuliya Tymoshenko, who garnered 19 percent and 18.2 percent, respectively. Significantly, according to the same polling agency, … [Read more...] about Oligarchs and their media outlets influence Ukraine’s presidential election

But even in such circumstances, it … [Read more...] about NABU refutes allegations of attempts to influence U.S. presidential election in 2016
