National Lottery ticket sales drop by £283million as players tighten their belts in cost-of-living crisis, Camelot announces
Outgoing UK National Lottery operator Camelot has revealed falling sales because players have 'tightened their belts' amid the cost of living crisis. Camelot, which recently launched legal action against the Gambling Commission after losing the National Lottery licence to a rival, saw sales drop by 3% - a loss of £283.2 million. The company made £8.1 billion in the last year up to March 31. Camelot blamed the fall in sales on a 7% drop in sales of National Lottery instant win games - down by £240 million to £3.4 billion. The group also blamed the end of Covid restrictions, which it said meant there was 'greater competition for people's attention and spend.' It added that 'growing economic uncertainty' and rising costs held back sales, while scratch card sales remained below pre-pandemic levels. Joe Thwaite, 49, and Jess Thwaite, 46, from Gloucestershire, won a £184 million EuroMillions jackpot in May. National Lottery operator Camelot said fewer rollover jackpots … [Read more...] about National Lottery ticket sales drop by £283million as players tighten their belts in cost-of-living crisis, Camelot announces

Child care costs to be cut to help parents through cost of living crisis
Boris Johnson will this week announce plans to relax childcare rules in order to save families £40 per week. A package of measures to bring down the cost of child care will include increasing the number of toddlers each adult can look after in nurseries, and allowing childminders to spend more time working from locations such as village halls, rather than their own homes. The changes, which will be subject to a consultation, are designed to bring down the costs of nursery fees, which have reached an average of £265 a week for two-year-olds, compared to £236 a week for childminders. Ministers are expected to claim that the proposals would save families £40 a week. Under plans being overseen by Nadhim Zahawi, the Education Secretary, ministers will also pledge to help more people to become childminders by relaxing the rules on where they can work. Currently, childminders are expected to care for children in their own home, or someone else’s residential property, but in many … [Read more...] about Child care costs to be cut to help parents through cost of living crisis

He said Britain was “reducing red tape” in relation to countries outside of the EU, such as India, and that there would not have been access to these “fantastic” opportunities had Britain remained in the union. Mr Rees-Mogg added that the operative issue when it came to soaring coasts and high inflation was the “lack of Chinese semiconductors and cities in China still being … [Read more...] about ‘Very little to do with Brexit’ Rees-Mogg says cost of living nothing to do with EU vote
Cost of living tsar’s tin-eared plans are a slap in the face for business
The Japanese car giant Nissan is recruiting for three hundred new roles at its Sunderland factory, we learnt last week, accelerating plans for new models. That’s good for the North-East and good for Britain. The bigger picture is that UK business confidence slumped in June, as firms grappled with inflation and slowing consumer demand. The Lloyds Bank business barometer fell to its lowest level since March 2021, the depths of lockdown. The vast majority of firms surveyed reported spiralling costs of the inputs needed to provide the goods and services: everything from steel to semiconductors, fertiliser to foodstuffs, building materials to beer. During the year to May, headline inflation – as measured by the consumer price index – rose 9.1pc, over four times the Bank of England’s 2pc target, a fresh 40-year high. The retail price index was up 11.7pc over the same period. Yet the most telling price data is captured by the producer price index, which sheds light on supply-chain … [Read more...] about Cost of living tsar’s tin-eared plans are a slap in the face for business
