Ford’s electric pickup truck will now cost at least $46,974
Ford Motor has increased the price of its electric pickup truck by thousands of dollars "due to significant material cost increases and other factors," the Michigan automaker said Tuesday. The basic model for the F-150 Lightning, called the Lightning Pro, will now start at $46,974, up nearly $7,000 from its $39,974 price tag earlier this year. The truck's most expensive model, the Platinum Extended Range, will cost $96,874, up by $6,000. Ford's price hikes come on the same day as President Biden's signing of new legislation designed to make it easier for automakers to get the semiconductors needed to manufacture new vehicles. The Chips and Science Act provides more than $200 billion to boost domestic production of the computer chips, White House officials said . Even though semiconductor shortages have weighed on the production of new vehicles, Ford said its price hikes were due to battery costs. "The vast majority of this price adjustment relates to battery material … [Read more...] about Ford’s electric pickup truck will now cost at least $46,974

Dozens offer one-eyed French bulldog Ugly Betty new home
Published 21 August 2019 Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Dozens of people from as far away as the United States have come forward to adopt a one-eyed French bulldog called Ugly Betty. The RSPCA launched an appeal on Tuesday to find the eight-year-old animal a new home after she was handed in to them in Essex in July. It hoped her "odd looks" and toilet troubles would not put people off. A spokeswoman said the charity was "thrilled so many people want to offer our beautiful girl a new home". The dog was "affectionately named" by her previous owner, who brought her to the RSPCA's Southend branch when they were no longer able to care for her. The charity said the 30-plus applications to adopt her had come in overnight. "We'll be going through the applications over the coming days hoping to find the paw-fect match for this Frenchie," said the spokeswoman. … [Read more...] about Dozens offer one-eyed French bulldog Ugly Betty new home
One-eyed French bulldog Ugly Betty needs new home
Published 20 August 2019 Share close Share page Copy link About sharing An animal charity is hoping a one-eyed French bulldog's "odd looks" and toilet troubles will not put off prospective new owners. Eight-year-old Ugly Betty arrived at an RSPCA branch in Essex last month. The dog, which staff said has a habit of collecting socks and flipflops, has a number of medical issues including the need to go to the toilet often. They hope medication will reduce the "adorable, sweet-natured" pooch's need for nightly puppy pads. Ugly Betty was "affectionately named" by her previous owner who brought her to the RSPCA's Southend branch when they were no longer able to care for her. "French bulldogs are a hugely popular breed at the moment and we were sure that Ugly Betty would be snapped up quickly," Kathy Butler, from the charity, said. "But we think people may be put off by her … [Read more...] about One-eyed French bulldog Ugly Betty needs new home
New Discovery in Ancient Pompeii Reveals Secrets of Roman Society
A series of four new rooms unearthed in a family home in Pompeii in southern Italy have revealed how the ancient Roman city's middle class struggled to keep up their status. Gabriel Zuchtriegel, director general of the heritage site, has shown how the new rooms highlight the vast difference between the ancient city's elite and the rising middle class. He explained: "In the Roman empire, there was an ample chunk of the population that struggled with their social status and for whom daily bread was anything but a given." The expert, who released details of the new find, shows how ordinary citizens' lives were a far cry from the sparkling fountains and mosaics of the ruling classes. A simple wooden cabinet is part of items that reveal the day-to-day lives of middle-class Romans. The cabinet contains what looks like a sink and the remains of a simple faucet. The discoveries were announced by the Pompeii Archaeological Park on August 7. The four new rooms were excavated in a … [Read more...] about New Discovery in Ancient Pompeii Reveals Secrets of Roman Society
WhatsApp mirrors Snapchat with new screenshot-blocking feature
WhatsApp is bringing in a new screenshot-blocking feature that resembles SnapChat to tempt privacy-conscious users back to the service as parent company Meta struggles with shrinking sales. The changes include the ability to block screenshots of time-limited messages, hiding one’s online presence from other WhatsApp users and leaving group chats without notifying others. WhatsApp owner Meta’s chief executive Mark Zuckerberg said: “We'll keep building new ways to protect your messages and keep them as private and secure as face-to-face conversations.” The ability to block screenshots mirrors one of the main functions of SnapChat, which alerts the sender of a time-limited photo if it is screenshotted before it self-deletes. Joseph Teasdale, head of tech at Enders Analysis, said the changes were “fairly minor product updates designed to keep WhatsApp competitive”. He added: “Mark Zuckerberg seems to be trying to return to the founder-led tech startup model of placing huge, bold … [Read more...] about WhatsApp mirrors Snapchat with new screenshot-blocking feature

Josh Groban on his new Netflix show, his new album and his canine collaborator
"Everything that's happened has been unexpected," Josh Groban says of his career. As a teenager, he studied acting, but that high lyric baritone could not be denied: By 2007, Groban was the No. 1 pop artist in the U.S., thanks in part to his 2003 hit "You Raise Me Up." In 2015, he was offered a starring role in the Broadway musical Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812 , an electro-pop adaptation of War and Peace. That earned him a Tony nomination. Now, a few TV cameos ( The Office, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend ) over the years have evolved into his own show, Netflix's The Good Cop, from Monk creator Andy Breckman. Groban plays Tony "TJ" Caruso, a by-the-book New York City police officer; Tony Danza co-stars as his dad, a disgraced ex-cop. The 10-episode series debuts September 21, which also happens to be the release date for Groban's eighth studio album, Bridges . "The timing was perfect," he says of Good Cop 's four-month shoot.
