Is a three-goal lead enough for more composed Liverpool? A magnificent, memorable victory, the second over Manchester City in the space of three months, but one question will dominate the thoughts of everyone connected with Liverpool over the coming days: will it be enough? Pep Guardiola’s juggernaut are the favourites for this year’s crown given their dominance but, much like how PSG wanted to avoid Real, City will have wanted to avoid Liverpool, the team whose strengths marry up to their weaknesses perfectly. Guardiola branded the triumvirate of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino “almost unstoppable” but will hope the “almost” part of that assertion is more true than the “unstoppable” bit given that the weakest part of City’s game – if it can be called that – is their defence. Both sides seem to have their Premier League positions sewn up so expect a European classic, but don’t call a Liverpool victory a shock – this one really could go either way. Mohamed Salah vs Aymeric Laporte / Fabian Delph How exactly do you stop Mohamed Salah? Precious few players have answered that question this season, and Manchester City’s chances of coming through Wednesday’s first leg unscathed largely rest on how they cope with him. City’s cause would be helped if they had a fit and natural left back to call upon, but Benjamin Mendy is still absent and his various understudies remain unconvincing. Aymeric Laporte, naturally a left-footed centre half, could take up the role again having started there against Everton, but a minor foot problem and a few nervy moments on Saturday could make Pep Guardiola reconsider. Fabian Delph is fit again and could return but has played just 135 minutes of football since coming off in January’s 4-3 defeat at Anfield. Danilo and Oleksandr Zinchenko are unlikely to be trusted. All told, it means that Liverpool’s best player is likely to find himself up against City’s weakest … [Read more...] about Liverpool vs Manchester City: Three key battles that will decide the Champions League quarter-final
