JORDAN HENDERSON dedicated his Champions League winner's medal to his cancer-sufferer dad after the pair shared an emotional embrace following the full-time whistle in Madrid. The Liverpool skipper, 28, went over to give him a massive hug and the pair stayed locked in each others' arms, both in floods of tears. It was an emotional night for everyone connected to Liverpool, but arguably none more so than the Henderson family. Jordan led his team out at the Wanda Metropolitano and goals from Mo Salah and Divock Origi secured a 2-0 win over Tottenham. It meant the midfielder was the man to lift Liverpool's sixth European Cup. But it was a special moment father and son shared on the sidelines that really pulled on the heartstrings.Speaking to Optus Sport, Henderson Sr said: "The way the game was going, I thought it was going to be 1-1 and go into extra time. "Everybody was dead on their feet but they came through and I'm just so proud. Unbelievably proud. MANCHESTER City could still avoid a Champions League ban - despite suffering a major legal defeat. City’s attempt to have Uefa’s Financial Fair Play case against the club thrown out was dismissed by the Court of Arbitration for Sport. The Etihad outfit went to Cas in June in a bid to get a ruling that Uefa’s Club Financial Control Board had acted illegally. The Control Board’s investigatory unit, headed by former Belgian Prime Minister Yves Leterme, is understood to have recommended City face a European ban. But before the case was considered by the five judges who sit on the Board’s Adjudicatory Chamber, City attempted to have the case ruled out of order. City challenged Uefa’s right to ask for the Judges to pass sentence, claiming there was no case to answer and questioning the legitimacy and haste of the investigation. Now that argument has been shot down - but it does NOT mean the Judges will follow the recommendation. In a statement issued in … [Read more...] about Man City lose appeal to block Uefa’s probe into Financial Fair Play case – but may still avoid Champions League ban
Champions League final 2019, Tottenham vs Liverpool: live score Jurgen Klopp is vividly describing the moment his seven-year-old self fell in love with European football. He is conjuring images of audio commentaries, exotic names and venues and a sense of ‘something special’ capturing the mood of cities, nations and continents. “You always knew when the big games were on,” he tells me. “My mum would put me in the bath, put the radio on and for one and a half hours I was there. My skin was done. It is more the legend of the competition I remember – the big German players of Bayern Munich and at that time Borussia Monchengladbach... Rainer Bonhoff, Bertie Vogts, Uli Stielike and Jupp Heynckes.”... … [Read more...] about Jamie Carragher meets Jurgen Klopp: ‘Who connected to Liverpool cannot love what we are doing?
It is inconceivable for Paris Saint-Germain to fall in the Champions League group stage so Thomas Tuchel is under no illusions of what is at stake ahead of Liverpool’s visit. Defeat would effectively end PSG'S interest in this year's competition, unacceptable for a star-studded team built to dominate Europe. When Tuchel spoke of the ‘long-term’ growth required in Paris - even suggesting his club is playing catch-up to Liverpool - it sounded suspiciously like a plea for clemency in the event of failure. You would imagine PSG are heading into the meeting as plucky outsiders trying to upset a superpower, not one of the two richest clubs in the world seeking to justify their vast outlay on Kylian Mbappé, Neymar and the rest. “Liverpool are used to being in the Champions League and winning this trophy and it means something in the club and mentality,” said Tuchel. “Having Jürgen there for 3½ years with his energy … [Read more...] about Thomas Tuchel positions Paris Saint-Germain as underdogs against ‘great’ Liverpool
IT MAY seem like a comedy down at Old Trafford right now but Ole Soslkjaer apparently has a cunning plan. That line always raised a laugh when Baldrick said it in Blackadder. Indeed the historical comedy made for hilarious viewing. While for Manchester United fans the goings are far from amusing, rival supporters are rolling in the aisles as the previously dominant force in English football lurches from one crisis to another. Few are enjoying it more than followers of table-toppers Liverpool, whose visit tomorrow has already got many United fans wincing and it hasn’t even kicked off. Still Solskjaer insists a plan exists to bring them back to the top of the game, even if they will have to take short term hits for long term gain. Those hits include losing the goals and experience of Romelu Lukaku to give youth a chance. To allow Alexis Sanchez to leave, however poor his time at Old Trafford had been, when there was no one in reserve. Solskjkaer wanted to create the right culture … [Read more...] about Man Utd face Liverpool deep in crisis – but boss Solskjaer has a cunning plan
