KYIV, Ukraine — Russian forces focused their latest attacks in Ukraine on the Donetsk region in the east, targeting civilian and military sites in multiple towns, the Ukrainian military said Monday. The general staff of Ukraine’s armed forces said Russia’s military also continued air and artillery strikes around the Azovstal plant in Mariupol, the last holdout of Ukrainian forces in the strategic city. In the Donetsk region, it said Russian forces used a range of weaponry on Ukrainian military fortifications and units and fired artillery at civilian infrastructure in the towns of Dovhenke, Ruski Tyshki, Ternova and Petrivka. Around Ukraine’s second-largest city Kharkiv, Russian forces are now concentrating on “maintaining positions and preventing the advance of our troops toward the border.” Ukraine’s military posted a video Sunday night showing its troops at the border in the Kharkiv region. The Ukrainian daily note did not detail specific gains or losses. It … [Read more...] about Live updates | Ukraine says Russia strikes at Donetsk sites

North Korea mobilises military as suspected COVID outbreak surges
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un criticised officials over slow medicine deliveries and mobilised the military to respond to a surge in suspected COVID-19 infections, as his nation struggled to contain a fever that has reportedly killed dozens and sickened nearly a million others in a span of three days. North Korean health authorities said on Monday that eight more people died and an additional 392,920 were newly found to have feverish symptoms. That brings the death toll to 50 and illnesses to more than 1.2 million, respectively. It’s a sharp jump from six dead and 350,000 sick reported last Friday, a day after the North said that it found that an unspecified number of people in the capital Pyongyang had tested positive for the omicron variant. Kim has acknowledged that the fast-spreading fever, highly likely driven by COVID-19, is causing “great upheaval” in the country, and outside experts say the true scale of the outbreak is likely much bigger than what’s described in the … [Read more...] about North Korea mobilises military as suspected COVID outbreak surges
U.S. fast tracks humanitarian aid to help North Korea fight coronavirus
The United States has fast-tracked assistance to North Korea in response to the coronavirus pandemic. The move comes despite the countries' leaders stalled denuclearization-for-peace talks and amid strict international sanctions. A State Department spokesperson told Newsweek that the U.S. had greenlit the delivery of certain goods to the largely closed-off country in an effort to ensure the country had access to critical supplies. North Korea remains one of the last nations in the world to not officially report any confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus disease that has infected nearly 2.5 million people globally, but concerns and suspicions remain about how the tightly-curated nation is fairing against the illness. "In the face of the extraordinary threat to global health and welfare caused by the COVID pandemic, the United States has expeditiously facilitated the approval of assistance from U.S. and international aid and health organizations to counter and contain the … [Read more...] about U.S. fast tracks humanitarian aid to help North Korea fight coronavirus

Monday morning news briefing: PM attacks EU on cost of living
After weeks of speculation, Boris Johnson is preparing to approve a law scrapping key parts of the Northern Ireland Protocol. One of the Prime Minister's key arguments is that the agreement is holding back Westminster from helping with the cost of living crisis . Mr Johnson will travel to Belfast today for talks with political leaders and is expected to sign off plans later this week for domestic legislation giving the Government the right to suspend elements of the Brexit deal. In an article ahead of his visit, he argues that the Protocol is "restricting" his ability to help with the province's "post-Covid recovery" and holding back growth. He notes that a UK-wide VAT cut on renewable energy products cannot be implemented in Northern Ireland due to the Protocol. Political editor Ben Riley-Smith says the move comes despite warnings it could collapse talks and cause a trade war with the EU . Meanwhile, Andrew Griffith, director of the No 10 Policy Unit, today argues … [Read more...] about Monday morning news briefing: PM attacks EU on cost of living

Covid: What will the pandemic look like in North Korea?
By Thom Poole & Robert Greenall Published 1 day ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Related Topics Coronavirus pandemic For almost two-and-a-half years, North Korea has stuck to its claim it has seen no cases of Covid-19. Not any more. This week, the country confirmed its first infections. The highly reclusive nation had responded to the pandemic by closing its borders, although few believed it had really managed to escape the virus. Now, the authorities are not only acknowledging the virus' presence but declaring an all-out battle to control it, with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un calling it the "greatest turmoil" to fall on the nation since its founding. A national lockdown is in place. Hardly anywhere in the world is untouched by Covid. Cases have been recorded at the base camp of Everest and in Antarctica. Hospitalisations soar by 330% in South African area where Omicron first detected
Hospitalisations have risen by 330% in the past two weeks in the South African province where the Omicron Covid variant was first detected. Gauteng has had 580 hospitalisations caused by Covid which is a 330% rise from the 120 people that needed hospital treatment two weeks earlier. At the same time the province, that includes Johannesburg, has one of the worst vaccine rollouts in South Africa with just under 40 percent of the 12 million residents having had at least one jab. Scientists are currently investigating amid fears that the Omicron variant could be the most infectious and could evade vaccination protection due to the extent that it has mutated. The news of the dramatic increase in hospitalisations comes as South African health officials have stated that cases of the Omicron variant have been mild.
