DAILY MAIL COMMENT: Rishi’s on our side with bills bonanza
If families thought the cost of living crunch was already hurting, they should brace themselves for much, much worse. Ofgem yesterday predicted that the energy price cap will spike again in the autumn to £2,800 – a leap of around 40 per cent on the current price ceiling of £1,971. With food and petrol bills also rising steeply, and a potentially job-destroying recession looming, millions are fretting over their household budgets. While Labour dishonestly seeks to portray the Government as coldly indifferent, it is to the Chancellor's credit that he has already introduced emergency help for struggling families worth £22billion this year. The hidden meaning behind the Queen’s handwriting in her letters
The Queen is not only the country’s longest-serving monarch, but she has also hit the record of most cards ever sent. Her Majesty has sent more than a million cards to people turning 100 and couples marking their diamond wedding anniversaries. And now a graphologist – someone who analyses handwriting – has offered her take on what the Queen’s script means in terms of her personality. Emma Bache, who is also a psychotherapist, worked with Inkpact to explore how handwritten letters from the royals communicate much more than just the words on the page. ‘The written word retains the power of intimacy and leaves potential for historians and sociologists to understand the relationships between author and recipient in a way that no other form of communication has ever done,’ she said. ‘A handwritten letter can be so potent that it can change life for the better for both sender and recipient. ‘Throughout history, women in particular have allowed us to glimpse into their … [Read more...] about The hidden meaning behind the Queen’s handwriting in her letters
Opinion: Mariupol — a symbol of Ukrainian courage and Russian shame
The darkest chapter in the history of Mariupol is coming to an end. Most of the Ukrainian fighters have left the Azovstal steel plant after almost three months of resistance. This was a record in Russia's war against Ukraine , which began with the annexation of Crimea in 2014. Only the airport in Donetsk was defended for even longer in 2014 and 2015. But the situation in Mariupol was much worse because Ukraine could not provide military aid to the besieged. Some Ukrainian fighters walked out of the bunkers under the steel plant; some had to be taken out on stretchers, others preferred to be the last to leave. The hope among those who have chosen captivity is that they be exchanged for Russian soldiers captured by the Ukrainian army. Whether that hope is justified is hard to predict. Russia seems to be in no hurry and is using the Ukrainian prisoners of war for humiliating propaganda purposes. Mariupol, on the shore of the Sea of Azov, is a household name today. It will … [Read more...] about Opinion: Mariupol — a symbol of Ukrainian courage and Russian shame
Johnny Depp’s grin after Kate Moss’ testimony delights social media
Johnny Depp appeared to grin at his former girlfriend after she testified in the defamation trial of his ex-wife, Amber Heard, on Wednesday, and his smile received a notable reaction from many on social media. Heard is being sued by Depp for $50 million for defamation regarding an opinion piece she wrote in 2018 in which she claimed—without naming Depp—that she was a victim of domestic abuse. The actress mentioned supermodel Kate Moss on the witness stand when alleging a rumor that Depp pushed Moss down a flight of stairs during their relationship 20 years ago. Because of the mention, Moss was asked to testify to discuss the rumor, and the model quickly denied that she was ever pushed down the stairs by Depp. After her very short testimony , which came by video, Depp appeared to smile at the screen. Many on social media delighted in his reaction and praised Moss for debunking the rumor, which was brought up by Heard first during Depp's 2020 libel trial against The Sun … [Read more...] about Johnny Depp’s grin after Kate Moss’ testimony delights social media
