Five people have been rushed to hospital following a large explosion at a residential street in Llanbradach near Caerphilly. It is understood that one casualty was airlifted to Birmingham for specialist treatment while three more were taken to Swansea’s Morriston hospital which has a specialist burns unit. A fifth casualty was last night reportedly being treated at University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff. Eyewitnesses described how local residents ran out of their homers armed with hose pipes and kitchen clingfilm to treat the injured. A spokesman for Gwent Police said: “An explosion was reported at 5.33pm. “There were five occupants at the address, all of which managed to escape. “All five have injuries, including burns, but there have been no fatalities.” Investigators are yet to confirm what caused the blast but it is understood that gas has not been ruled out. A man who has lived in the UK for 54 years was forced to miss his daughter’s wedding because the Home Office refused to give him a British passport. Joseph Bravo’s parents travelled from Jamaica to England on the Empire Windrush and brought him to join them when he was seven years old in the early 1960s. The 62-year-old electrician has paid taxes in the UK all his working life and applied for a passport in 2010, but was refused on the basis that the Home Office could not find any record of him.
