It’s more than just swearing… How a heart surgeon with Tourette’s syndrome loses his tics the moment he picks up his scalpel
Widespread myths about Tourette’s syndrome are preventing young people from spotting early signs of the disability and seeking help, experts and patients living with the condition have warned. Studies show that roughly half of all cases of the neurological disorder – which causes involuntary behaviours – are undiagnosed, leaving thousands without vital support. ‘There is a lack of understanding of the condition from the general public,’ said Dr Melina Malli, a researcher in Tourette’s syndrome at Manchester Metropolitan University. ‘People refer to stereotypes of what people with Tourette’s should do – like swearing – so those with less well-known symptoms might not be diagnosed.’ Dr Wilson Tsai was diagnosed with Tourette's when he was in medical school, despite that, he has become a heart and lung surgeon based in the United States (picture posed by model) Studies show that roughly half of all cases of the neurological disorder – which causes involuntary … [Read more...] about It’s more than just swearing… How a heart surgeon with Tourette’s syndrome loses his tics the moment he picks up his scalpel

Scottish wildcat: ‘Rarest kittens’ in the world rescued, group says
Published 19 July 2018 Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Two orphaned Scottish wildcat kittens have been rescued, a conservation group says. Wildcat Haven says the animals were found "dehydrated" and "weak" in the West Highlands of Scotland. The group says the kittens are being cared for until they're old enough to be released into the wild. Only 35 wildcats are left in Scotland, Wildcat Haven says. The kittens' rescue offers hope to a species which is near extinction. Wildcat Haven says it was made aware of the kittens' existence after a member of the public reported seeing them. The group says they were rescued 24 hours after they were spotted. Its team says it used remote cameras and bait to figure out that there was no mother looking for the kittens and that they were orphaned. "I almost fell off my chair when I saw the photos," says Wildcat Haven's … [Read more...] about Scottish wildcat: ‘Rarest kittens’ in the world rescued, group says

What beauty parlours reveal about Somali women
Published 21 hours ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing The BBC's Mary Harper writes about her experiences at Somali beauty parlours. I was relaxing in a comfy chair when a woman came at me with a long, sharp knife. That first time, I was terrified. Now I am accustomed to ladies approaching me with blades. It is all in the name of beauty. Carving knives are used in some beauty parlours to scrape dried henna paste off legs, arms and hands, revealing delicate, dainty patterns on the skin that slowly fade away with time. Whenever I go to the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, my friend Suheyba meets me in the predominantly Somali neighbourhood of Eastleigh - known as "Little Mogadishu". After a lunch of camel meat, we go for henna. The last salon we went to was about the size of a cupboard, separated from the bustling street outside by nothing more than a ragged curtain. … [Read more...] about What beauty parlours reveal about Somali women
