NOBODY likes having frizzy, crunchy-feeling hair, but we've all had it from time to time. Split ends are pretty much unavoidable, so here's all we know about them and how you can get rid of them. What are split ends and what causes them? Human hair is made up mostly of a protein name Keratin, and it's stitched together by chemical bonds which keep the hair healthy, but it's damage prone and very fragile. Split ends occur when the hair is damaged for whatever reason. There are multiple different causes behind why hair might damage to the point of breaking. The main cause behind hair splitting is a lack of moisture, so using heat on hair, especially without a protecting spray increases the risk of hair snapping. Using chemicals on the hair such as bleach dries out hair and increases strain on the follicles. Over-washing can also contribute to split ends as it can strip hair of its natural oils, which keeps hair healthy and hydrated. Some have suggested that central heating can cause … [Read more...] about How to get rid of split ends – does central heating cause dry hair and do split end trimmers actually work?
Lips getting dry
It is a truth universally acknowledged that nobody likes having chapped lips. So when her lips started to feel a little dry, one woman went on a desperate search around the house for some lip balm to remedy the situation. Finally she found a little pot of what she assumed was Vaseline, in her mum's bedroom. So she borrowed it without asking and applied a layer of the contents to her lips. But pretty soon she realised something wasn't quite right. In a hilarious video posted on social media, Dayana Chamorro, explains that what she found in her mother's room wasn't lip balm. It was an anal relaxant. Attempting to speak through her laughter, she says: "I was looking for a lip balm as I do not like to get dried lips. I took this without asking, because I thought it was lip balm. "I put it on and felt my lips fall asleep. I ask and I was told 'this is not lip balm, it is an anal relaxant!" Her mother can be seen in the background of the clip making fun of her daughter. The moral of the … [Read more...] about Woman stunned to learn ‘lip balm’ borrowed from mum’s room isn’t what it seemed
A list of conditions which will no longer normally be prescribed treatments has been released by the NHS. Last week it was ruled that a swathe of everyday remedies which can be easily bought over the counter will no longer be handed out on prescription. NHS England says it will save millions. Cough mixture, eye drops, laxatives and sun creams are among a range of products that will no longer be routinely prescribed, NHS England officials last week report Mirror Online . Proposals to rein in prescriptions for medicines for dozens of minor conditions, received "broad support" in a public consultation, board members heard. NHS England said it spends £22.8 million every year on constipation treatment, £3 million on athlete's foot and other fungal infections, and £4.5 million on dandruff shampoos. The prescription changes could free up almost £100 million for the health service, the body added. Simon Stevens, chief executive of NHS England, said: "Across the NHS our … [Read more...] about ‘Minor’ problems will no longer get prescriptions from GPs
A grandmother is waiting to have all four limbs amputated after falling victim to sepsis from a "paper cut". The family of Marguerite Henderson were told to prepare for her death while the 54-year-old lay in an induced coma for seven days. Marguerite from Crosshill near Lochgelly, Fife, pulled through but doctors now have no choice but to amputate all four limbs as a result of the deadly infection. Now Marguerite's family have launched a fundraising campaign to raise £80,000 to give the former Fife Council support worker a bionic hand, prosthetic legs and an electric wheelchair. Speaking today, Marguerite's eldest daughter Kim Donnachie, said: "She noticed on the Sunday (February 25) that she had a tiny cut on her index finger on her right hand. "It was that miniscule, she doesn't even remember how she got it. It was just a cut the size of a papercut. "By the next day it looked infected so she went to the pharmacist to see if they had anything for it and they told her to get it … [Read more...] about Gran, 54, to have all her limbs removed after getting sepsis from ‘paper cut’
The NHS has banned a range of medicines which used to be prescribed routinely in a major cost-cutting exercise which is expected to save millions of pounds a year. Amongst them are cough mixture, paracetamol, eye drops, laxatives and sun creams, NHS England officials ruled yesterday. Proposals to rein in prescriptions for medicines for dozens of minor conditions received “broad support” in a public consultation, board members heard. Simon Stevens, chief executive of NHS England, said: “Across the NHS our aim is to: ‘Think like a patient, act like a taxpayer’. “The NHS is probably the most efficient health service in the world, but we’re determined to keep pushing further. “Every pound we save from cutting waste is another pound we can then invest in better A&E care, new cancer treatments and much better mental health services.” More than 60% of respondents to the consultation agreed that over-the-counter products should not … [Read more...] about The full list of medicines you CAN’T now get on NHS prescription
