Subscribe to the Telegraph TODAY for £1 per week - 50 per cent off! The death knell of the British and Irish Lions was sounded last week. And there was not a peep of protest at their passing, not a scintilla of regret that a great institution, one that helps rugby reach out to a whole new constituency every four years, one that inspires kids and freshens palettes grown jaded by the same old fare, has been reduced to an add-on thought. You want six weeks for a proper tour, eh? Tough. We grandees got round a table in San Francisco a couple of years ago and came up with a schedule that shoehorns you into an abbreviated slot - so get used to it. It’s five weeks, eight games, only two midweek... … [Read more...] about Shortening the British and Irish Lions tour betrays its essence – it’s almost been reduced to fag-paper status

Abu Dhabi accused of ‘using Manchester City to launder image’
English football has been warned it has allowed one of its major clubs to be exploited as a "branding vehicle" by an international regime accused of human rights abuses after a trial in Abu Dhabi, a country ruled by Manchester City's owner and his brothers, was widely denounced as repressive, involving torture, and "fundamentally unfair". Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have vehemently protested against the mass arrest of 94 people, their alleged torture while in Abu Dhabi jails, a "fundamentally unfair" trial, and long prison sentences with no right of appeal handed down earlier this month to the 69 people convicted. Amnesty said the treatment of the 94 in the United Arab Emirates, where Sheikh Mansour al-Nahyan's family, rulers of the richest emirate, Abu Dhabi, are dominant, "shows the authorities' determination to crush any form of dissent". Falklands war veteran wins apology over LGBT ban
A British Falklands war veteran has been given his medals back and received an apology from the Ministry of Defence after being forced out of the navy over his sexuality. Joe Ousalice, 68, had served in the navy for nearly 18 years when he was discharged in 1993 because of a ban on LGBT people serving in the armed forces. The former radio operator, who lives in Southampton, served in the Falklands war, did six tours of duty in Northern Ireland, was posted to the Middle East and was seconded for two and a half years to a Nato taskforce. Ousalice was stripped of his long service and good conduct medal and three good conduct badges when he was discharged because of his sexuality. Following a historic court settlement in a case brought by Liberty, the human rights organisation, the MoD has apologised and restored Ousalice’s medals. The ministry is establishing a scheme so that others in Ousalice’s situation can get their medals back. Ousalice said: “I should have always … [Read more...] about Falklands war veteran wins apology over LGBT ban
UK economy will grow 2% this year but slow next, OBR predicts
The UK economy will confound forecasts for a Brexit-related slowdown through 2017, but will then quickly run out of steam as rising prices hit consumer spending, the Office for Budget Responsibility has predicted. The government’s independent forecaster said that since its November outlook, the economy had performed better than expected and it raised its forecast for economic growth this year to 2% from 1.4%. But it predicts growth will be slower than previously thought in 2018, at just 1.6%. The new forecasts still paint a gloomier picture for growth than those published this time last year, when the UK was yet to vote for Brexit. Setting out the new forecasts, the OBR’s chairman, Robert Chote, said the pattern of growth it envisaged had changed to one where the economy expands more quickly this year then slows, rather than the other way round as forecast in November. But the result in five years’ time was roughly the same in terms of where the economy would end up. … [Read more...] about UK economy will grow 2% this year but slow next, OBR predicts
