FORD is ditching petrol and diesel — as it turns its Fiesta, Focus and Mondeo electric. The carmaker says it will have the first of its plug-in models — believed to be a small SUV — out by 2023. And it pledged that all of its cars will either be electric or hybrid within five years. Ford of Europe president Stuart Rowley said: “We are going all in on electric vehicles.” The company sells more new cars in Britain than any other manufacturer — but has not built any here for two decades. It had already announced the closure of its petrol engine plant at Bridgend, South Wales. The latest announcement means it joins a growing list of carmakers — including Jaguar , Volvo and Bentley — to ditch the internal combustion engine. Ford will spend £720million updating its factory in Cologne, Germany, to produce mass-market plug-in vehicles. Production of diesel engines for the Ford Transit will continue for a few more years yet. The engines are made in Dagenham, … [Read more...] about Ford to make all its cars either electric or hybrid as Focus gets eco makeover

Moment cyclist narrowly avoids being crushed by blue-lighted fire engine that makes quick turn into closed road
This is the moment a cyclist came up against a fire engine and nearly a lot more than just his dignity. A motorbike driver caught the incident in helmet cam footage where the truck made a quick indicated turn across the bike's path and nearly wiped him out. The run in was spotted on Euston Road next to Great Portland Street station. In the footage, the cyclist made a quick start away from a set of traffic lights at the central London tube stop. The huge fire engine is front of the bike rider, and appears to already have its indicator on to turn left. The cyclist may have been thrown off by the fact the left-hand lane was closed to traffic, but blue-lighting fire truck seems to show its intention early. The cyclist makes a quick start at a set of traffic light and comes up along the fire engine that is seen indicating to turn left and misses the cyclist warning sticker on the back of the truck The fire truck makes the turning as the biker … [Read more...] about Moment cyclist narrowly avoids being crushed by blue-lighted fire engine that makes quick turn into closed road

Stripes in modern life may trigger migraines and seizures, warn scientists
Stripes are ubiquitous in modern life, from City shirts and barcodes, to Venetian blinds and zebra crossings But a new study suggests they might be making us ill. Scientists in the Netherlands and the US have discovered that for some people, simply looking at vertical lines, either on a static image, or in real life, can trigger a neural loop of activity in the brain. In severe cases it can lead to epilepsy, but researchers think it might also be responsible for migraines. Around one in seven people suffer migraines in Britain and the cause if often unknown. But the study authors believe that stripes in clothing, buildings or public artworks could be triggering disabling headaches, particularly in people who are already sensitive to light. They suggest decking, radiators, escalators, repetitive brickwork and even the stripes on awnings or deckchairs could set off attacks, seizures, or just a vague feeling of unease. "Our findings imply that in designing buildings, it may be important … [Read more...] about Stripes in modern life may trigger migraines and seizures, warn scientists
