STUFF Customs manager of intelligence Bruce Berry speaks about the arrest of airport baggage handlers and gang members for drug smuggling. Customs has stopped training its sniffer dogs to detect cannabis coming through the border and now does not have any dogs for the job. The border protection agency stopped the training back in 2017. The revelation comes following news Customs’ dogs are not trained to sniff out fentanyl because it is dangerous to them. Instead, the agency trains its dogs to focus on drugs like methamphetamine and MDMA and large amounts of cash. A retired State Fire Marshal’s Office K-9 officer who found key physical evidence in the arsons of three St. Landry Parish Baptist churches in 2019 has passed away. Retired K-9 officer Monty, a 12-year-old golden Labrador, died peacefully on Tuesday, State Fire Marshal’s Office spokesperson Ashley Rodrigue said in a statement. Monty joined the state agency in 2012 and retired in July 2020 . “Monty was my friend, buddy and partner,” his handler Lt. Brian Mashon said. “I am going to miss him until we meet again.” Monty’s keen nose and accelerant detection training played a key role recovering evidence in the burnings of St. Mary, Greater Union and Mt. Pleasant Baptist churches in late March and early April 2019 — a story that garnered national attention. Bedford explosion hero fears neighbour is dead after saving dog from smoke-filled flat
A hero survivor of the Bedford gas explosion fears her neighbour may be dead after she broke into her flat and saved her dog. Karina Caetano rescued the Chihuahua after hearing a huge explosion above her two-bedroom apartment in Redwood Grove, Bedford, yesterday. The 24-year-old pulled the animal out of a smoke-filled bedroom but she is now terrified her neighbour was in one of the other rooms. No-one has heard from the resident since a gas explosion tore apart the complex , killing one person. Bedfordshire Police has warned that more bodies could be found in the building's ruins over the coming days.
