Australia's under-pressure Great Barrier Reef is an asset worth AU$56 billion (£33 billion) and as an ecosystem and economic driver is "too big to fail", a new study has revealed. The World Heritage-listed reef is the largest living structure on Earth and its economic and social value was calculated for the first time in the Deloitte Access Economics report commissioned by the Great Barrier Reef Foundation. It said the reef - bigger than Britain, Switzerland and the Netherlands combined - was worth AU$29 billion to tourism, supporting 64,000 jobs. The "indirect or non-use" value - people that have not yet visited the reef but know it exists - was estimated at AU$24 billion, with recreational users such as boaters making up the rest. The study, based on six months of analysis, comes as the reef has suffered an unprecedented second straight year of coral bleaching due to warming sea temperatures linked to climate change. It is also under pressure from farming run-off, … [Read more...] about Great Barrier Reef worth £33bn to Australia and supports too many jobs to be allowed to die, says new study

Great Barrier Reef bursts back to life… but climate change still poses a threat
Australia’s Great Barrier Reef is bursting back to life in remarkable fashion after being damaged by warming waters , a new investigation has revealed. The world heritage site is currently boasting its greatest coral cover in decades. However, experts cautioned that the regrowth was made up largely of a common, fast-growing but weak genus known as acropora that could easily be lost . Acropora is renowned for its branching colonies that resemble staghorns and can grow in thickets covering large areas in a variety of colours. It also plays a key role in reef building, providing a large percentage of the calcium carbonate structure, and is tied to the popular imagination of the Great Barrier Reef, frequently being pictured on postcards. However, it is particularly vulnerable to storms and crown-of-thorns starfish, which feed on coral, and often grows in “boom and bust” cycles. The reef, which stretches for nearly 1,500 miles along the coast of Queensland, has been … [Read more...] about Great Barrier Reef bursts back to life… but climate change still poses a threat

Max Verstappen taunts Mercedes after mid-season rule change – ‘Can’t design car properly’
Max Verstappen expressed his disappointment in reaction to news that the FIA will change F1 rules in the middle of the season. The sport's governing body said on Thursday it would take action in the interest of driver safety . That announcement came in the wake of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix weekend, which saw several drivers complaining about pain and risk – Lewis Hamilton included. Its technical directive warned teams that it would be implementing a maximum limit on the amount of bouncing a car is allowed to do before it is deemed unsafe. Any team which breaches that rule would then face a penalty. It could be seen as good news for Red Bull – as they have largely eliminated their own porpoising problems without sacrificing performance, they are unlikely to fall foul of this new limit this season. But all the same Verstappen feels the FIA should not have got involved on this issue, while taking a swipe at Mercedes and their F1 rivals. "I think it's a bit disappointing … [Read more...] about Max Verstappen taunts Mercedes after mid-season rule change – ‘Can’t design car properly’

Archie Battersbee’s family vow to call for change following 12-year-old’s death
The family of Archie Battersbee have called for a review to be held following the young boy's death, saying they want "something good to come out of this tragedy". The 12-year-old, who had been in a coma since April, died in the Royal London Hospital on Saturday after weeks of legal wrangling resulted in his life-sustaining treatment being stopped. He was being kept alive by a combination of medical interventions, including ventilation and drug treatments. Doctors treating Archie for the last four months declared him as "brain-stem dead" but his family had argued for his life support treatment to continue in the hope he would eventually recover. His parents had made bids to the High Court, Court of Appeal and European Court of Human Rights to have him transferred to a hospice to die, but these were all rejected. Now, Archie's family have vowed to call for "change" to ensure nobody else goes through such a "horrendous experience". "We want something good to come out … [Read more...] about Archie Battersbee’s family vow to call for change following 12-year-old’s death
