· February 5, 2021 ·

Britons have revealed how they are spending some of their £150billion in extra savings amassed during the lockdown as the pandemic stopped them from splashing out on expensive holidays and nights out.   Families built up their bank deposits from £1.48trillion to £1.63trillion over the course of 2020 – a rise of £151.7billion, the highest since records began in 1997, according to Bank of England figures. Now, families across Britain have revealed how they have been spending their lockdown savings, including Mrnalini Raman, 37, who bought her first home in Hertfordshire after getting a £12,000 refund on holidays. Wedding photographer Amber Leach, 38, saved more than £13,000 then gave her Plymouth home a makeover before selling it, while HR manager Laura Wainwright, 32, of Halifax, cleared £8,000 in credit card debt. Actors Emma Thomas, 33, and husband David, 32, of Cambridgeshire, turned to working nights at Tesco after theatres … [Read more...] about We’re going to spend, spend, spend (as soon as Boris lets us): From planning a world trip to buying a house, families reveal how they are going to blow the £150BILLION banked during pandemic that should fuel post-Covid boom

Welcome to Hotel Quarantine: Inside the $80-a-night Ibis where arrivals into Heathrow from 33 ‘red list’ countries will have to spend ten days in Covid isolation – without leaving their rooms – for $2,600

· February 11, 2021 ·

A three-star Ibis will be among the hotels welcoming Heathrow arrivals as part of the government's travel quarantine programme, MailOnline can reveal. The three-star Ibis Styles London Heathrow East hotel opened in December 2019 and features brightly-coloured 1920s 'Art Deco-inspired' rooms behind a geometric red brick exterior. However, travellers won't be able to enjoy the spacious bar and dining areas as they will be confined to their rooms for the entire 10-day stay, with airline food left at the door. Guests at the 125-room hotel will have to change their own sheets and towels and be accompanied by security if they want fresh air or a cigarette outside. Arrivals will have to pay £1,750 per person - a rate set by the government. The hotel usually charges around £60 for a standard room including breakfast, which would normally work out at £660 for 11 nights – the length of the quarantine stay. The Ibis, which has 125 rooms and is a 12-minute drive from Terminals 2 and … [Read more...] about Welcome to Hotel Quarantine: Inside the $80-a-night Ibis where arrivals into Heathrow from 33 ‘red list’ countries will have to spend ten days in Covid isolation – without leaving their rooms – for $2,600

Ronnie O’Sullivan and Laila Rouass’s new life – Buddhism, green tea and early nights

· February 6, 2021 ·

He’s not quite at the pipe and slippers stage but it looks like The Rocket’s turbo boosters have been turned down a few notches. For years, snooker speed king Ronnie O’Sullivan grabbed the headlines for his booze and drug antics as well as his wizardry at the table. But at 45, a father of three – and even a grandad – the current world champion really does have a more philosophical approach to life. And he can thank fiancée Laila Rouass for that. The Holby City actress has been researching the teachings and methods of the Buddha and Greek philosophers as part of her studies in wellbeing. She says Ronnie has bought into the idea too and is a calmer cueman as a result. Gone are the days – and nights – of living it up with rock giants like Ronnie Wood and Liam Gallagher. Now, says Laila, 49, her fella is more likely to be found tucked up in bed for an early night with a cup of green tea. Having seen the effect on Ronnie, the former … [Read more...] about Ronnie O’Sullivan and Laila Rouass’s new life – Buddhism, green tea and early nights

· July 17, 2019 ·

YOUNG drivers could be banned from being on the road at night in Government plans to tackle high accident rates. Under proposals being considered by the Department for Transport, novice drivers would be restricted on the hours they spend behind the wheel. A "graduated licence" system could be introduced, reports The Times , following the lead from other countries which have already brought in restrictions. An announcement on planned changes is set to come tomorrow, amid concerns over the high rate of accidents young people are involved in. Michael Ellis, the road safety minister, told the newspaper: “We want to explore in greater detail how graduated driver licensing, or aspects of it, can help new drivers to stay safe.” Young drivers would potentially have an overnight curfew or need to be supervised when driving in the dark. If brought in, it could apply to all new drivers, regardless of age. But other countries which have introduced a similar system have typically … [Read more...] about Young and newly qualified drivers ‘to be banned from the roads at night’ in government plan to cut crash deaths
