The destruction wrought by Hurricane Matthew has affected 350,000 Haitians and left the country facing its worst humanitarian crisis since the devastating earthquake six years ago, the UN has said. Ten thousand Haitians are living in shelters, hospitals are under severe strain and water is in short supply, according to Mourad Wahba, the UN secretary general’s deputy special representative for Haiti . A situation report from the UN’s Office for the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs (Ocha), citing information from the Haitian government’s directorate of civil protection, said 350,000 men, women and children in Haiti were in need of assistance. Ocha said flooding had been reported in 11 towns on Haiti’s southern coast. WILLIAM and Kate spent their first night together as man and wife in the luxury Belgian suite. Normally used by visiting foreign heads of state, the large suite boasts six bathrooms. The main bedroom’s elaborate centrepiece is a king-size bed with draped decorative bedhead and stunning crystal chandelier. A huge gold-rimmed mirror sits above the fireplace. The room is filled with period furniture and has a hand woven carpet. Wills and Kate will have had a team of royal footmen on hand to serve their every need. The suite is situated at the foot of the Minister’s Staircase, on the ground floor of Buckingham Palace’s north-facing garden wing. The Belgian rooms were inspired by and named after Leopold I, the first King of the Belgians. He was the uncle of Queen Victoria’s husband Prince Albert and reigned from 1831 to 1865. The country has been in a perpetually fragile state ever since. The murder of Italian Ambassador Luca Attanasio , his bodyguard Vittorio Iacovacci, and World Food Programme (WFP) driver Mustapha Milambo after the UN convoy they were travelling in was attacked near Goma, is a stark reminder that the DRC is still not ready to relinquish its … [Read more...] about Opinion: Another cold case in the Democratic Republic of Congo?
It was almost a month ago that the president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Ahmad Ahmad , took to social media to congratulate Morocco for its victory over Mali at the final of the African Nations Championsh i p . The man from Madagascar will be hoping that on March 12, he will be on the receiving end of congratulations not just from Morocco, but from national federations all over the continent on winning a second term as CAF president. As things stand, though, the chances of that happening look slim. FIFA mission 'successfully completed' Whoever does become the president of CAF will have a relatively free hand to plot a new course for the federatio n — which hasn't always been the case. For six months of Ahmad's first term , FIFA General Secretary Fatma Samoura and her team were tasked with overseeing CAF in a mission aimed at improving the governance of the confederation. In February 2020, FIFA declared … [Read more...] about CAF election: African football is at a crossroads
