Alisson's dramatic late header away at West Brom kept Liverpool in the race for top four - which could be decided by the tightest of margins. Jurgen Klopp 's former champions were in desperate need of three points at the Hawthorns on Sunday, but Hal Robson-Kanu's early goal left them trailing. Mohamed Salah then equalised just after the half-hour mark, before Alisson headed home the most astonishing of stoppage-time winners right at the death - becoming only the sixth goalkeeper to score in the Premier League. His goal means Liverpool are now only one point adrift of fourth-place Chelsea and three behind Leicester in third, and the latter pair are due to play each other on Tuesday. The Reds' two remaining fixtures come away at Burnley on Wednesday and at home to Crystal Palace next Sunday, while Leicester and Chelsea have tough outings against Tottenham and Aston Villa respectively after their meeting on Tuesday. Winning both would all but secure Champions League … [Read more...] about Liverpool’s top-four chances explained in race to hunt down Chelsea and Leicester

From despair to delight in nine years for Swansea City
By David Dulin Published 27 May 2011 Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Swansea City stand on the brink of promotion to the Premier League - dubbed the world's richest league - yet nine years ago, they were on the verge of going bust. Businessman Tony Petty's turbulent three-month spell in charge at the end of 2001 almost brought the club to its knees. Supporters took to the streets in protest against the Australian's running of the club as he attempted to sack seven players and two coaches, which the Professional Footballers' Association thwarted. But a local consortium of supporters, headed by former director Mel Nurse, later battled to gain control of the club. And on 24 January, 2002 - reportedly 24 hours before the club was set to go out of business - they ousted Petty. Huw Jenkins was installed as chairman but it was not a by no means smooth start for the … [Read more...] about From despair to delight in nine years for Swansea City
Georginio Wijnaldum’s controversial reaction to Alisson’s header riles Liverpool fans
Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson headed in a sensational 95th-minute winner away at West Brom on Sunday - but team-mate Georginio Wijnaldum didn't bother celebrating. Alisson is only the sixth goalkeeper in Premier League history to score a goal , and the first to fire home a winner for his side. It was an astonishing moment at the Hawthorns which will live long in the memory of Reds fans, especially given they could now leapfrog Leicester or Chelsea into the top four by winning their next outing away at Burnley. When he headed the ball home and wheeled away in celebration Alisson was mobbed by almost all of his team-mates, apart from Wijnaldum. Liverpool fans were quick to point out how the Dutch midfielder, who is set to leave Anfield upon the expiry of his contract next month, was the only player who chose not to get involved in the celebrations for Alisson's goal. Instead, he could be seen simply turning away nonchalantly before walking back to his own half. … [Read more...] about Georginio Wijnaldum’s controversial reaction to Alisson’s header riles Liverpool fans
Liverpool fans fume at Fantasy Premier League decision after Alisson’s last-minute goal
Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker produced one of the most incredible moments of his career on Sunday as he scored the first goal of his professional career. The Brazilian stopper went up for a corner with the Reds drawing 1-1 with West Brom at the Hawthorns. And he collided perfectly with Trent Alexander-Arnold's corner and headed the ball into the top corner. The win sparked emotional celebrations on and off the pitch, but Reds fans were left disappointed in the aftermath. Fantasy Premier League tweeted after the game to confirm that Alisson had been given two bonus points on top of the six he accumulated during the match. Mohamed Salah, who scored the equaliser in the first half of the match, was given the maximum of three bonus points. But Liverpool fans felt it should have been the other way around. Liverpool’s quadruple bid started with moment that left Jurgen Klopp speechless
Liverpool are still dreaming of achieving the impossible as their slim hopes of sealing the quadruple improved on Sunday. But there is a consensus that Jurgen Klopp ’s side wouldn’t even be discussing it without the "unbelievable" heroics of goalkeeper Alisson Becker. A year ago today, the Brazilian stepped up in a way no Liverpool goalkeeper ever has — by scoring in a competitive match. But it wasn’t just any goal. The Reds, drawing 1-1 at West Brom, needed three points to have a chance of securing a top-four finish, but the clock was against them and they had squandered several chances already. In the fifth minute of stoppage time, they had one final opportunity to snatch victory from the Baggies, who were fighting against relegation. As Trent Alexander-Arnold stood over the ball at the corner flag, Alisson made a quick dash up the field to join his colleagues in the penalty area. In came the delivery with enough whip and power on it to catch the defenders by surprise. … [Read more...] about Liverpool’s quadruple bid started with moment that left Jurgen Klopp speechless

Fans joke ‘Rafa Benitez’s last inside agent’ is trying to get Everton relegated
Liverpool fans have flocked to Twitter to joke that Everton striker Solomon Rondon’s red card on Sunday was a plan orchestrated by Rafa Benitez from his time at Goodison Park. The Toffees lost 3-2 to Brentford at the weekend to add to their relegation woes in a match where victory would have seen them confirm their status as a Premier League club for next season. With Everton chasing the game, manager Frank Lampard substituted Rondon onto the pitch to provide a presence in the final third. But after just three minutes of the Venezuelan entering the pitch, he was trudging off of it after receiving a straight red card. The former West Brom forward was sent off for a horrendous two-footed challenge on Rico Henry, who was lucky to avoid serious injury. Rondon was signed by Benitez last year whilst he was at Everton and some Reds supporters have joked that their former manager is close to completing an ‘inside mission’ to relegate the Toffees. One fan wrote on Twitter: … [Read more...] about Fans joke ‘Rafa Benitez’s last inside agent’ is trying to get Everton relegated
A birth, a death, a proposal, and a spot of disputed paternity: BRIAN VINER reviews Downton Abbey: A New Era
Downton Abbey : A New Era (PG) Rating: Verdict: The gift that keeps on giving Back To The Future, Eyes Wide Shut and True Lies are fine examples of cinematic oxymorons - film titles which contradict themselves. And joining them last night was Downton Abbey: A New Era, which predictably plunges us straight back into Downton Abbey, the old era. Downton’s creator Julian Fellowes did not get where he is today (the House of Lords, for starters) by denying his fans what they expect. So the new film, the second big-screen spin-off after 2019’s Downton Abbey, positively bursts with all our favourite ingredients, not least the Dowager Countess of Grantham (Dame Maggie Smith) firing acid barbs through pursed lips, which is easier said than done. Downton Abbey: A New Era, the second big-screen spin-off after 2019’s Downton Abbey, positively bursts with all our favourite ingredients The ‘new era’ bit concerns the arrival of the movies. It is 1928, and a dishy director, … [Read more...] about A birth, a death, a proposal, and a spot of disputed paternity: BRIAN VINER reviews Downton Abbey: A New Era
