Vladimir Putin has threatened nuclear war at least 35 times—U.K.’s Johnson

July 1, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

Russian President Vladimir Putin has made dozens of nuclear threats since the start of the war in Ukraine but they should only be seen as "saber-rattling," British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said. In an interview on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Madrid, Spain, Johnson told British radio station LBC on Thursday that Putin was seeking to shift his invasion of Ukraine into a fight with the alliance. When asked about the view by the former U.K. ambassador to Washington Kim Darroch that NATO needed to be ready for a nuclear strike, Johnson replied: "There's an analysis that I think has been done by somebody recently, a think tank, that they're looking at about 35 mentions or perhaps it's a little bit more now." Johnson did not mention the think tank in question and Newsweek has contacted the press office of Number 10 Downing Street for clarification. Soon after the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February, Putin did raise alarm in the West when … [Read more...] about Vladimir Putin has threatened nuclear war at least 35 times—U.K.’s Johnson

Watch: Ukrainians use U.S.-made MLRS against Russian forces

July 5, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

The Ukrainian military used American HIMARS multiple rocket launching systems against Russian forces. The American military equipment, which was first developed in the 1990s for the U.S Army, was being used in the field by the Ukrainian army near Zaporozhye, in southeastern Ukraine. The footage was obtained Monday from the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, along with a short statement saying: "Zaporozhye direction. HIMARS continue the demilitarization of the Russian army of occupation. Together we will win!" The footage was also relayed by the Center for Strategic Communications and Information Security, a Ukrainian governmental organization that operates under the umbrella of the Ministry of Culture and Information. Zenger News contacted the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine for further comment, as well as the Russian Defense Ministry, but had not received a reply at the time of writing. The Ukrainians are running out of time

July 5, 2022 by www.telegraph.co.uk

Boris Johnson has declared that what Nato should be offering Ukraine is “deterrence by denial”. What he presumably meant is that Kyiv should be provided with sufficient weapons, intelligence and other support that Russia would never attack it again. Nato went a long way down that road at its summit in Madrid last week – but for its own benefit, not Ukraine’s. It promised heightened conventional security for Europe’s future defence, reassuring its Baltic and central European members and affording Sweden and Finland evidence of the benefits of membership. However, none of these states faces an imminent threat to its security from Russia. Ukraine, by contrast, is fighting for its life. Deterrence by denial will only be of use to it after the war is over. Russia was not deterred from invading and Ukraine is trying to win a conflict, not to prevent one. The best that Nato can achieve is a level of intra-war deterrence sufficient to prevent Russia escalating either with chemical and … [Read more...] about The Ukrainians are running out of time

Robert Crimo’s father lost mayoral race to gun-control Democrat

July 5, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

The father of a man who has been arrested in the wake of a deadly mass shooting in Highland Park, Illinois reportedly ran for mayor of the city in 2019 and was defeated by a pro-gun control Democrat. Robert E. Crimo III was apprehended by police following a manhunt on Monday but has not yet been charged with any crime. He had been named as a "person of interest" following the shooting that left six people dead and dozens more injured. Crimo's father, Bob Crimo Jr., ran for mayor of Highland Park in 2019 and was defeated by incumbent Mayor Nancy Rotering, according to a number of media reports at the time and since Crimo III was arrested.
