Universal credit fraud costs taxpayers more than £5bn
By Michael Buchanan Published 2 hours ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Universal credit fraud hit a record high of 13% in the year to April 2022, costing the taxpayer more than £5bn. It marks an increase of almost three-quarters on pre-pandemic fraud levels, and a slight rise on the previous year. From the start of the pandemic, the government eased certain conditions to allow unprecedented numbers of people to access financial help. Fraud levels across all benefits were 3%, which the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) said was "unacceptable". The DWP statistics show one in four claims for universal credit was overpaid - either because of error or fraud. Total spending on benefits in 2021-22 went up by 2.1% or £4.1bn, mainly because of a rise in the number of universal credit claimants, and an inflation-linked increase to the payments. … [Read more...] about Universal credit fraud costs taxpayers more than £5bn
Burnley RELEGATED to Championship after 2-1 defeat against Newcastle as Leeds beat Brentford on final day of season
AT least Burnley can say they went down fighting – they just didn’t expect the knockout punch to come from within their own ranks. Nathan Collins will never be able to explain quite why he stuck out a hand to flick away Kieran Trippier’s 18 th minute corner for Newcastle’s opener. And while there was still plenty of time after Callum Wilson’s penalty, courtesy of the inevitable VAR decision, that was the moment which broke Burnley hearts. Yes, there was another goal from striker Wilson to add to it, and true, the Clarets still had enough chances to save themselves. But that was the instant, that was the second, when Turf Moor just knew what was coming. At the end Collins was in floods of tears, and full credit to the classy Newcastle players who raced over to haul him to his feet and attempt to comfort him. They had no chance. One-off £650 payment to be given to 8,000,000 of UK’s lowest income households
Rishi Sunak has said around eight million of the lowest income households will be sent a one-off payment of £650. The Chancellor told MPs: ‘We need to make sure that for those whom the struggle is too hard and for whom the risks are too great they are supported.’ Those on Universal Credit, Tax Credits, Pension Credit and legacy benefits will receive the payment automatically. This afternoon the government set out a £15 billion package of support in the House of Commons to help people deal with the cost of living crisis, with inflation at 9% and energy bills set to rise again in October when Ofgem raises the price cap. It comes the day after Sue Grey finally released her report into rule breaking gatherings in Downing Street while the country was in lockdown. Boris Johnson apologised for the breaches but refused to step down, despite several Tory MPs saying that they thought he should resign. Mr Sunak insisted that the government is ready to support those … [Read more...] about One-off £650 payment to be given to 8,000,000 of UK’s lowest income households

I’m blind and can’t get a job – disabled people are being forgotten in the cost of living crisis
I don’t ever remember being able to fully see. The last visual memory I have is walking along a path when I was around 18 years old; I can remember that it was summer and that I could see a flash of colours, in the flowers and the grass around me. But I had started to lose my sight years before then, from around five years old, before being registered as severely blind as a teenager. My sight impairment is primarily caused by glaucoma – a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve, caused by an abnormally high pressure in the eye. The health of the optic nerve is essential to be able to see. The impact that being severely blind has on my life is enormous – it means that I can’t live independently and that I have to rely on my family for care. It also means that, as a disabled person, the cost of living crisis is impacting me, and my family, hugely. In fact, disabled people – myself included – are often hit hardest by price hikes like this. It may be … [Read more...] about I’m blind and can’t get a job – disabled people are being forgotten in the cost of living crisis
UK’s wealthiest people revealed in new Rich List
Rishi Sunak and Akshata Murty have made the Sunday Times Rich List for the first time with their joint £730million fortune. It comes as the number of billionaires in the UK swells to a record high, as the country is gripped by a cost of living crisis. Sunak, 42, is the first frontline politician to appear on the rich list since it began in 1989. The Chancellor and his wife’s finances came under intense scrutiny last month after it was revealed Ms Murty had non-dom status. This allowed her to avoid paying UK tax on foreign earnings as she one day planned to return to live in India. It has been estimated Ms Murty’s non-dom status could have saved her £20million in taxes on dividends from her shares in Indian IT company Infosys. Questions were also raised over the pair’s tax arrangements after it emerged that Sunak and his wife had kept hold of their US green cards after returning to Britain. Ms Murty later agreed to pay UK taxes on her worldwide income, while … [Read more...] about UK’s wealthiest people revealed in new Rich List
