More patients are dying than they should be at 29 NHS trusts, claims an eminent hospital death rates expert. MailOnline last week named and shamed the 13 health service-ran organisations across England that recorded excess deaths in 2017. But Professor Sir Brian Jarman, who helped expose the Mid-Staffordshire hospital scandal, fears the true figure is much higher. He recalculated the NHS Digital data for MailOnline and found a further 16 trusts ran by the health service fall into the excess deaths category. According to his analysis, there were 6,800 more deaths than expected at hospitals ran by the 29 trusts - significantly more than NHS estimates of 3,700. Blackpool Victoria Hospital, ran by the Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS FT, has been flagged up for having excess deaths every year since 2014 The County Hospital is ran by Wye Valley NHS Trust, which was named as one of the 13 NHS trusts with excess deaths in 2017 WHERE WERE THE 29 NHS TRUSTS … [Read more...] about 29 NHS trusts have excess deaths – NOT 13!

0 Have your say The dignity of hospital patients was compromised when they had to be placed in cramped conditions on corridors at a shortstaffed NHS trust. The Care Quality Commission (CQC) found that some patients were being looked after in unsuitable conditions during “unprecedented” demand at St James’s University Hospital in Leeds.Inspectors found that up to 40 patients a day were being placed in “non-designated” areas, including ward corridors and treatment rooms, at the hospital between October and December.A report by the watchdog said some patients were in parts of the hospital without windows and with no access to call bells. The CQC report said: “On some wards, doors banged into patient beds or patient beds blocked access to toilet, bathroom and shower facilities.” The inspectors found that some patients were struggling to sleep on noisy corridors and nurses found it difficult to carry out checks on patients due … [Read more...] about ‘Dignity compromised’ at Leeds Teaching Hospitals, says report
0 Have your say The main NHS trust in Leeds bought more than 12.7m disposable cups over the last five years, new figures show. Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust was the second worst offender in Yorkshire, behind its Sheffield counterpart, and was among the 14 trusts in England which bought more than 10m cups each.Across England, health providers bought more than 600m disposable cups since 2013, data obtained through freedom of information requests by the Press Association showed.Based on the latest population estimates, the total works out as 11 for every person currently living in the country. It comes amid increasing alarm over the environmental impact of throwaway items and significant Government moves to crack down on single use plastics.Plastic, foam and paper cups are used across the health service from waiting rooms to wards, for hot drinks, cold drinks and dispensing medicines. While some can be readily recycled others are considerably harder to recycle - such as … [Read more...] about Leeds NHS trust buys 12m disposable cups over five years as providers across England purchase more than 600m
0 Have your say An NHS trust has been urged by five Leeds MPs to reconsider plans to transfer more than 2,000 staff to a private company. Labour’s Alex Sobel, Richard Burgon, Fabian Hamilton, Hilary Benn and Rachel Reeves voiced concerns over the proposal by Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS trust in a letter to chief executive Julian Hartley. They raised fears that the formation of the company could see some NHS staff employed on less favourable terms and conditions than others. Yesterday, the trust board decided to allow more time to consult staff over the plan, which would affect estates, facilities, procurement and clinical engineering workers. The MPs said: “Whilst we welcome the extended consultation period, we do not believe than any degree of consultation will mitigate the reasonable and far-reaching concerns expressed by NHS staff.”The trust has said it intends to keep staff who are transferred to the company on their current terms and conditions. But the … [Read more...] about Leeds NHS slammed over ‘privatisation’ plans affecting 2,000 staff
Almost half of Jimmy Savile's victims in his home county - including three people who were just five at the time - were abused in hospitals, according to newly released figures. Last week, a West Yorkshire Police report into the disgraced broadcaster's relationship with the force confirmed officers had identified 68 victims in the force area since his death. None came forward when Savile was alive. Now the force has released a further breakdown which reveals 29 were abused in hospitals across the region - 23 of them at Leeds General Infirmary (LGI). The youngest abuse victim at LGI was just five, police said. Savile had a close relationship with LGI, famously volunteering as a porter and raising cash for the hospital over decades. The force said other victims included a five-year-old and 12-year-old at St James's Hospital, also in Leeds. Another person who has come forward said they could not remember at which of these two hospitals the abuse happened due to the passage of time. One … [Read more...] about 29 report Savile abuse in hospitals
