Remember # MeToo ? #TimeIsUp? #EnoughisEnough? How about #BelieveWomen? Only five years ago we seemed to be on the brink of a sea change, finally, finally turning the tide against culturally embedded misogyny. The #MeToo hashtag seemed to offer a glimpse into the immense scale of sexual violence, abuse and harassment against women across the world. #MeToo was supposed to herald a new age with increased understanding of the dynamics of abusive relationships, the maltreatment of survivors of sexual violence, and the socio-cultural context that supports perpetrators and allows them to hide in plain sight. When Harvey Weinstein was brought to account for years of abuse against women, it seemed to signal that enough really was enough in Hollywood and that women might now be respected – even believed. But then came Depp v Heard 2.0 – and all that has gone before seems to count for nothing. Recommended Why do people blindly support Johnny Depp? I’ll tell you … [Read more...] about What have we learnt from #MeToo? Johnny Depp v Amber Heard holds the answer

Secrets and Lies in the School Cafeteria
Late on a fall afternoon, a skeleton crew staffed the cafeteria at New Canaan High School, in Connecticut. She wore a jacket over a loose gown. She clutched something to her chest that appeared to be a bag connected to an IV. “What are you doing here?” one of the workers asked. The woman said nothing. She shuffled to her small office. The door clicked shut. The workers exchanged looks. They’d heard that Marie Wilson had been undergoing treatment for breast cancer. She had every right to stay home and rest. Yet here she was, hobbling into the kitchen near sunset, reporting for duty. There would be more days like this one. Days when Wilson endured life’s worst moments—a grandson’s leukemia … [Read more...] about Secrets and Lies in the School Cafeteria

Buffalo shooter’s livestream sparks criticism of tech platforms over content moderation
The 18-year-old suspect who allegedly gunned down 10 people in a mass shooting at a supermarket in Buffalo , New York, on Saturday had, authorities say, an assault-style rifle, body armor, a tactical helmet -- and a small camera. The horror that followed became the latest mass shooting simultaneously broadcast online. Twitch, the Amazon-owned platform on which the video appeared, said it took down the broadcast after less than two minutes. But that duration gave enough time for individuals to download and repost copies of the video, one of which was viewed more than 3 million times, after a link to the video on Facebook garnered more than 500 comments and 46,000 shares before its removal, the Washington Post reported. How concertgoers can stay safe during an attack
— -- After 59 people were killed and more than 500 injured in a mass shooting at a music festival on the Las Vegas strip, staying safe while attending an event such as a concert, movie or ballgame has become a top concern for many. Events that attract large crowds are now seen as easy targets for terrorists, former FBI agent and ABC News contributor Steve Gomez told ABC News in May after a suicide bomber killed 22 people at the Ariana Grande concert in Manchester , England. "With that, they have to be prepared for a situation to occur when they go into large groups," Gomez said. Here are some tips for how to stay safe at crowded public events: Remain calm and mindful Before joining a crowd, ask yourself: "Am I in a place where a vehicle can jump a curb and come driving at me?" Gomez said. In the event of an attack, the "first thing you need to do is think," said Zach Hudson, an active threat expert and CEO of Grantham Systems, a Longwood, Florida-based … [Read more...] about How concertgoers can stay safe during an attack
China’s Costly Exceptionalism
A merica has long thought itself exceptional, a blessed place destined to bring freedom to the world. China has an even longer history of self-proclaimed exceptionalism and, spurred by its many modern achievements, is more assertively promoting its brand of governance as a model for the world. The widening confrontation between the United States and China is thus becoming a “clash of exceptionalisms.” From the Chinese viewpoint, the country’s successful containment of the coronavirus over the past two years is incontrovertible evidence of its system’s superiority, especially when compared with the performance of its democratic rival. While wave after wave of the virus has pummeled the U.S. and other open societies, claiming millions of lives, China’s authoritarian state has kept cases at or near zero, ensuring its 1.4 billion people have been safe, sound, and employed. This “zero COVID” policy has become a slogan for China’s emerging greatness. The higher the death toll has risen … [Read more...] about China’s Costly Exceptionalism
