Scottish independence: More would vote for remaining in UK if referendum were held tomorrow, poll suggests

· March 7, 2021 ·

A small survey has suggested more Scots would vote in favour of remaining in the UK if a second independence referendum was held. Some 46% said they would vote No for Scottish independence if a referendum was carried out tomorrow, while 43% said they would vote Yes and a further 10% said they didn't know, in polling carried out by Savanta ComRes for The Scotsman on Sunday. When unsure voters are excluded, the poll indicates 52% to 48% in favour of the union, according to Savanta ComRes. An A to Z guide to the explosive scandal at the top of Scottish politics A total of 1,015 people were surveyed between 4 and 5 March, although the figures have not been weighted for voter turnout. This means the figures are not directly comparable with previous polls on the subject, which have consistently shown the Yes vote having a lead for months. However, the poll does give some indication that the Alex Salmond inquiry could be turning some voters away from … [Read more...] about Scottish independence: More would vote for remaining in UK if referendum were held tomorrow, poll suggests

Scotland’s chief law officer ordered search of top civil servant’s office for Salmond complaint documents

· March 6, 2021 ·

Scotland's chief law officer ordered a search of the office of its top civil servant to find documents on complaints against Alex Salmond. Sky News has seen records of a legal hearing in which counsel, acting for the government, said the Lord Advocate instructed a complete search of the "entire electronic repository of the permanent secretary's office" to retrieve material. Opposition parties say the Lord Advocate's intervention "beggars belief". The Scottish Government has responded by saying of its permanent secretary, Leslie Evans: "Any accusation that she withheld information is categorically untrue." The documents sought related to the 2018 legal challenge by Scotland's former first minister of a government investigation into harassment complaints against him. Advertisement The government eventually conceded the so-called judicial review after its investigation was ruled "unlawful" and "tainted by apparent bias" by the Court of Session. … [Read more...] about Scotland’s chief law officer ordered search of top civil servant’s office for Salmond complaint documents

Apple probed over ‘unfair’ App Store by UK competition watchdog after complaints

· March 4, 2021 ·

APPLE is being probed by the UK competition watchdog over alleged "anti-competitive behaviour". The iPhone maker's App Store terms will be investigated to find out if Apple has broken UK laws. A number of developers have allegedly complained to the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA). These aggrieved app-makers have said that Apple's terms and conditions are "unfair and anti-competitive". "Millions of us use apps every day to check the weather, play a game or order a takeaway," said CMA chief Andrea Coscelli. "So, complaints that Apple is using its market position to set terms which are unfair or may restrict competition and choice. "Potentially causing customers to lose out when buying and using apps – warrant careful scrutiny." An Apple statement in response to the probe reads: "We created the App Store to be a safe and trusted place for customers to download the apps they love and a great business opportunity for developers everywhere. "In the UK alone, … [Read more...] about Apple probed over ‘unfair’ App Store by UK competition watchdog after complaints

Last man called by one of the murdered ‘Essex Boys’ was never questioned by police

· March 5, 2021 ·

The last man called by one of three gangsters murdered in the 1995 “Essex Boys” killings was never questioned by police, it has emerged. Retired detective David McKelvey says the suspected villain was linked to a man who has previously been named as the shooter, but was never charged. Instead Jack Whomes and Michael Steele were jailed for life after being convicted of blasting the drug dealers with a shotgun in their Range Rover 26 years ago. But Mr McKelvey, and his team of highly experienced former murder detectives, now claim to have found evidence supporting the account of an East End crook who told police he was the getaway driver for the real killer. Mr McKelvey, who runs private investigation firm TM-Eye, said: “We have done a thorough and detailed investigation which has led us to believe there may have been a miscarriage of justice. “Compelling new evidence throws the case into doubt and we are appealing for witnesses to come forward.” The bodies of Pat Tate, 36, … [Read more...] about Last man called by one of the murdered ‘Essex Boys’ was never questioned by police
