Peter Brook’s Titus Andronicus, August 1955

June 25, 2003 by www.theguardian.com

"Nobody could accuse Peter Brook of simplicity," wrote Kenneth Tynan in 1953. "He cooks with cream, blood and spices." The description now seems bizarre, but in 1955, when the man the Evening Standard called "a plumping ex-prodigy in a powder-blue suit, with electric blue eyes, beetle brows and an enthusiastic titter" announced that he was to direct Shakespeare's bloodiest play, many anticipated a "horror comic", as Philip Hope-Wallace described it in the Manchester Guardian. Brook surprised him, coaxing "dazzling simplicity out of a terrifying tawny darkness". "Titus Andronicus," wrote the Evening Standard's Milton Shulman, "has only been given two major productions in 100 years. The squeamish may well wonder why there have been so many." But Brook - whose first stab at Shakespeare had been a four-hour, one-man Hamlet, staged for an intimate audience (his parents) when he was seven - was determined to rehabilitate the play. First he took his red pencil to the text, removing … [Read more...] about Peter Brook’s Titus Andronicus, August 1955

Christopher Fry

July 3, 2005 by www.theguardian.com

Christopher Fry, who has died, aged 97, was, with TS Eliot, the leading figure in the revival of poetic drama that took place in Britain in the late 1940s. His most popular play, The Lady's Not For Burning, ran for nine months in the West End in 1949. But although Fry was a sacrificial victim of the theatrical revolution of 1956, he bore his fall from fashion with the stoic grace of a Christian humanist and increasingly turned his attention to writing epic films, most notably Ben Hur (1959). Fry, who was born in Bristol, came to the theatre via schoolteaching. He attended Bedford modern school, acted briefly in Bath, then taught at the Bedford Froebel kindergarten and at a preparatory school in Limpsfield, Surrey, before chucking it up to found the Tunbridge Wells Repertory Players in 1932. He ran the company for three years, directing the English premiere of Shaw's Village Wooing. He went on to write lyrics and music - including a song called I'll Snatch The Man From The Moon … [Read more...] about Christopher Fry

Cam and Tania Bowen of AWOL Adventures had to stop two canyoning trips in the Waitākere Ranges Regional Park when their access tracks were closed to prevent  spread of the tree-killing infection. The Bowens took up to 1500 people a year into the ranges, and hope to resume their Piha tours when a track upgrade is complete, but Cam Bowen does not know when that will be. "We could survive if that track was open. If they decide to keep it closed, we're screwed."
