A look at Elon Musk’s ever-expanding business empire
With his deal to take over Twitter, Elon Musk could soon be in control of the communications medium used by the world's most influential leaders – in addition to being at the helm of the world's most valuable carmaker and the rocket building firm that has revitalized the US space program. All at the same time. It is rare for one executive to divide his or her time between so many ventures. In fact, Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, who simultaneously ran payments platform Square (which is now called Block), was criticised for not being able to focus his attention full-time on Twitter. He stepped down from Twitter last year. Musk has a tendency to launch headfirst into initiatives important to him – though he also delegates his work, relying on teams of leaders to carry out his vision. Musk has a habit of pouring his money into ventures he sees as “existential”. An early pioneer of the online payments space, Musk took the earnings from PayPal's sale to eBay and funnelled it into two … [Read more...] about A look at Elon Musk’s ever-expanding business empire
The new jet set – why private plane usage has soared
By Susan Hornik Published 1 day ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Entrepreneur Rick Schirmer says that he and his family "feel safer" travelling by private plane. "Flying private means our family is able to avoid the airport security experience, airport crowds, flight rage, and being surrounded by people who often won't mask properly," says the Los Angeles-based marketing boss. While the vast majority of us have never been on a private plane, it is easy to understand the appeal. It is a luxurious and exclusive world where you can avoid large airports and other passengers. And there is no rush to meet your check-in time - as the sleek jet takes off when you are ready, and not the other way round. Plus, in many cases, you don't even have to go into a terminal building. Instead the limousine drives out onto the tarmac, right up to the aircraft. Where a smiling member … [Read more...] about The new jet set – why private plane usage has soared
Square Enix to create new studios after selling its old ones
The latest financial results for Square Enix give insight to its plans, including making new studios to replace the ones it’s selling. It’s only been over a week since Square Enix announced that it will be selling its Western studios to Embracer Group , and yet it’s already talking about establishing entirely new studios in their place. As part of its financial results for the recent fiscal year, Square Enix talks about its future business strategy. Aside from cultivating its franchises and creating new ones, it wants to ‘boost game development capabilities by establishing new studios.’ It doesn’t specify where any prospective studios would be based, but it would be odd to establish new studios in the West when it just sold the ones it had because they weren’t making enough money. Crystal Dynamics’ Avengers live-service game has routinely struggled since it launched in 2020 and even Square Enix has described it as a disappointment . Royal Mail ramps up drone deliveries with 50 new routes
As trade union leaders gear up to launch industrial action this summer, Royal Mail is ramping up an initiative that could make the role of the British postie increasingly redundant. The postal monopoly is to increase its dependency on drones to make deliveries with the creation of 50 new “postal drone routes”. Over the next three years Royal Mail wants to deploy 200 drones to deliver mail across the UK. The fleet will be expanded to 500 longer-term, the company said. Island communities across the Isles of Scilly, Shetland Islands, Orkney Islands and the Hebrides, where mail is typically transported by ferry or plane, will be the first to benefit from the new routes. Royal Mail boss Simon Thompson, a former executive at Apple, Ocado and Morrisons, wants to accelerate the company’s use of low-carbon transport in the hope that it will be a differentiator to rivals such as Amazon in years to come. Mr Thompson is already in talks with Network Rail to dramatically increase … [Read more...] about Royal Mail ramps up drone deliveries with 50 new routes

I’m an engineer but it wasn’t what I wanted to do – I now own a jewelry business that recycles unwanted silver
SUSTAINABILITY has become one of the major business goals for many brands, but one jewelry company has decided to step it up a notch and only work with like-minded suppliers, as well as using recycled silver and gold. Wonther launched just months before the Covid-19 pandemic hit and has still managed to continue growing at a very rapid pace. Olga Kassian graduated as an engineer from the University of Aveiro in Portugal after escaping Ukraine when she was just a child. "I was always taught that whatever I wanted to achieve, it had to be by myself because business wasn't for everyone – you had to have money, connections, and all those things that an immigrant's daughter usually doesn't have," she told The US Sun in an exclusive interview. "So I grew up very focused on studying science. I have an engineering degree. However, there was a year that I had the chance to live in New York City and while there, it opened my eyes to a whole different world. Co-op becomes first UK supermarket to launch ‘walking deliveries’
People will soon be able to order ‘walking deliveries’ of food, drink and other household items. The Co-op will become the first supermarket to trial the new project. ‘Walking deliveries’ will operate from around 200 stores, including in smaller towns and villages. The chain vowed to include rural areas known as ‘quick delivery deserts’ where people feel they are ‘offline’ from many home delivery options enjoyed in cities and large towns. Trials were previously carried out in Cornwall, and proved a success. The same-day deliveries will be available to households and businesses within a 15-minute walk of their nearest store. Orders will be placed into a specially designed trolley, before being walked towards each customer’s home. It comes as the Co-op also announces to expand its small army of delivery robots, which have become a familiar sight in Milton Keyes and in Northampton. There are plans to expand the autonomous fleet in more towns and cities across … [Read more...] about Co-op becomes first UK supermarket to launch ‘walking deliveries’
