Flights are on average 35 minutes longer than a decade ago, a report has revealed, that claims airlines are "padding" their schedules to create a false impression that passengers are arriving on time. An investigation by Which? Travel said that despite advances in air travel, flights today are actually slower than they were in 2009 - and it claims it's the airlines fiddling with flight times to avoid compensation payouts. The consumer website said firms are deliberately adding on extra time to make it appear as though they are arriving on schedule and to give them leeway to 'catch up in the air' if they're running late. This means a flight that would previously have been scheduled in for eight hours would now be sold as 8.5, allowing the pilot buffer time to make up for any delays incurred before its officially considered 'late' and liable for compensation. Researchers examined average flight times for 125 routes operated by large airlines in 2009 and compared them with last year. … [Read more...] about Airlines ‘fiddling with flight times’ to stop passengers getting compensation

Stansted Airport has defended its decision to charge someone £25 for leaving its drop-off car park a minute late. Jon Gaunt, 57, had been using the designated point to pick up a friend on June 15. The process of claiming compensation for a delayed or cancelled flight is notoriously non-user-friendly, to the point where some travellers are put off following through with their legal right. So much so that according to the latest figures, more than £4million in reparation is currently owed to passengers in the UK, with Thomson racking up the highest amount of debt (£2.4million to approximately 5,000 delayed passengers). Furthermore, according to UK law firm Bott & Co - which drew the data from the Registry Trust Online, a company that records all County Court Judgments in England and Wales - 73 per cent of claims that have been made to Thomson were wrongfully declined by the carrier. And these are the passengers who bothered to try. Plenty more simply don't have the time to wrestle with the bureaucracy. Maruis Fermi, UK manager at the flight compensation website AirHelp, said: "We know that each year 8 million air passengers are entitled to compensation for a delayed, … [Read more...] about Which airlines owe passengers the most money in compensation?
Passengers will have stronger rights flying from the UK than from EU airports after Brexit. The government has said it has no intention to change compensation rules on delayed flights, even though the EU is soon to reduce pay-outs. In addition, airlines could be ordered to make travellers’ entitlements clearer — for example by making on-board announcements advising delayed passengers to claim, or automatically paying compensation. Airlines, which have long lobbied for less onerous compensation obligations, are dismayed at the new proposals.
