Sir Koi, voters will carp when you’re a fish out of water in the real world

· April 20, 2021 ·

THE “Westminster bubble” is a goldfish bowl for politicians. They swim back and forth in safe waters, navigating around each other while largely disconnected from the people who put them there. But the second they venture outside and, shock horror, encounter “the voter”, there’s a clear and present danger that the bubble gets popped and they’re left gasping for air. The latest one that didn’t get away is Labour leader Sir Koi Starmer, who blithely strode into The Raven pub in Bath for a post-lockdown, cleansing ale while on the Mayoral campaign trail in Bath. The visit had been pre-arranged with the pub’s co-owner Tim Perry who, presumably, was on board with the media-managed idea of Sir Keir dropping in for a “spontaneous” pint with jolly, on-message locals while projecting a “just like one of the lads” image. But the other co-owner, Rod Humphris, clearly didn’t get the memo. Despite being a Labour supporter, as soon as he clapped eyes on the Westminster … [Read more...] about Sir Koi, voters will carp when you’re a fish out of water in the real world

Earth Day 2021: Boris Johnson leads climate calls as MPs come together to make pledges to save the planet

· April 22, 2021 ·

BORIS Johnson will today warn US President Joe Biden and other leaders they must slash emissions this decade or be remembered as the people who failed the planet. The PM will urge them to match the UK's target of net zero by 2050 at the President's major climate summit this afternoon. Speaking on Earth Day, he will say: "The UK has shown it's possible to slash emissions while growing the economy. If we want to stop climate change, then this must be the year." It comes as MPs from across the political spectrum have today come together to vow new green goals to help save the planet. To celebrate Earth Day with an international day of action, Britain's politicians have vowed to go even greener to combat the climate emergency. Later today the US President will host a huge international summit online to address world leaders and call on them to do more to save the world before it's too late. He and the PM will push others to match the UK's ambitious climate targets, … [Read more...] about Earth Day 2021: Boris Johnson leads climate calls as MPs come together to make pledges to save the planet

My boyfriend choked me, suffocated me & hung me from a noose in a three hour attack – I’m glad it was caught on camera

· April 22, 2021 ·

BATTERED and terrified, Bethany Marchant banged on the window screaming for help until boyfriend Stefan Carr rammed his fist into her mouth to silence her - but worse was still to come. In an ordeal that lasted three hours, the mum-of-one was thrown about Carr’s home in Castleford, Yorkshire, suffocated with a pillow, had a knife held to her throat and was hung in a homemade noose until she passed out. Incredibly every moment of the 2019 attack was caught on a host of cameras set up in Carr’s home - and the footage was later shown in court, where he was jailed for 11 years. Brave Bethany, now 25, tells her story in the Crime+Investigation programme, Survivors with Denise Welch , which airs on Monday. She tells the Sun that, while the physical scars from the attack have gone, it’s left her with deep mental scars which may never heal. “I have PTSD, depression and anxiety. I've had a lock put on my bedroom door and I’m only just now starting to leave it open at night, … [Read more...] about My boyfriend choked me, suffocated me & hung me from a noose in a three hour attack – I’m glad it was caught on camera

Marcus Rashford to teach kids how to cook cheap dinners as part of food poverty campaign

· April 22, 2021 ·

FOOTBALLER Marcus Rashford will swap pitches for kitchens to teach kids how to cook cheap dinners as part of his heroic food poverty campaign. The Man Utd ace will be joined by Michelin-starred TV chef Tom Kerridge in a new series of Instagram videos called Full Time, launching today. The pair will show how to knock up 52 filling dinners with ingredients costing pennies and equipment as limited as just a kettle. Marcus, 23, said he was forced to learn the very basics while filming - starting with how to peel a carrot. He said: “Even though I’m not the best cook, I’ve enjoyed it massively. I like getting in the kitchen and doing my best - and it turns out to be quite fun. “I enjoy putting myself in situations where I know I’m going to have to concentrate and learn and take steps forward. “Sometimes young people are afraid of mistakes. But when I was younger my brother always told me, if you don’t make mistakes you will never be the player that you can become. … [Read more...] about Marcus Rashford to teach kids how to cook cheap dinners as part of food poverty campaign
