National minute of silence to be observed at start of Prince Philip’s funeral

· April 10, 2021 ·

There will be a national minute of silence held in memory of Prince Philip before his funeral begins on Saturday. Buckingham Palace announced that Philip's ceremonial royal funeral will take place on April 17 in St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle. A national minute's silence will be observed as it begins at 3pm. The duke's coffin will be transported from the castle to the chapel in a specially modified Land Rover he helped to design, and followed by the Prince of Wales and senior royals on foot, a senior Palace official said. The Queen has approved the Prime Minister's recommendation of national mourning, which began on April 9 and runs until and including the day of the funeral. Only 30 people - expected to be the Duke's children, grandchildren and other close family - will attend as guests, but the Duchess of Sussex has been advised by her physician not to travel to the UK for the funeral, a Palace spokesman said. It is understood Meghan made every effort to be … [Read more...] about National minute of silence to be observed at start of Prince Philip’s funeral

Stuart Dallas scores twice as 10-man Leeds beat Manchester City with two shots on goal

· April 10, 2021 ·

Stuart Dallas scores well taken goal late before Liam Cooper sent off for reckless tackle on Gabriel Jesus Ferran Torres scores equaliser but Dallas pounces for second as City push for a winner A stunning and deserved victory by the ten men of Leeds United will have no lasting impact on Manchester City’s march towards the Premier League title but the manner of his fourth defeat of the campaign will leave Pep Guardiola with plenty of food for thought as he targets even greater prizes. Two goals from Stuart Dallas, the winner in the 91st minute, saw Leeds join a list that now also features Leicester, Tottenham and Manchester United as the only teams to have inflicted defeat on City in their 49 games this campaign. But, brilliant as Leeds were, this defeat was also, at least in part, self-inflicted as Guardiola made sweeping changes ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League quarter-final visit to Borussia Dortmund. Seven players who started the narrow first leg victory in … [Read more...] about Stuart Dallas scores twice as 10-man Leeds beat Manchester City with two shots on goal

Manchester United take step towards Europa League semi-final with patient win over tricky Granada

· April 8, 2021 ·

Marcus Rashford scores excellent goal in the first half Bruno Fernandes fortunate to score late penalty as goalkeeper dives correct way B runo Fernandes’ last-minute penalty was scored with just one eye open and helped Manchester United put one foot in the semi-finals of the Europa League. Marcus Rashford had earlier scored a crucial away goal at Estadio Municipal Nuevo Los Cármenes but the tie was still in the balance, particularly with Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw and Scott McTominay picking up bookings to rule them out of next week’s second leg. But Fernandes made sure their path to the last four will be much easier. He was fortunate to be awarded the penalty when Yan Brice’s caught him as a cross came in, then luckier to see his spot-kick squirm through the hands of his good friend Rui Silva. It was, however, enough to make sure United are in control of this quarter-final. “He got hit and his eye was red when I saw him,” said United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. “To … [Read more...] about Manchester United take step towards Europa League semi-final with patient win over tricky Granada

Manchester City reach FA Cup semi-finals as Kevin De Bruyne inspires win over Everton

· March 20, 2021 ·

T here must be a way of stopping Pep Guardiola’s great winning-machine but no-one quite knows how yet - not even a manager of Carlo Ancelotti’s calibre whose side tried to win this FA Cup tie without the ball only to find themselves beaten, like all the others. These are times this season when it can feel like the rest of English football exists only as a backdrop for the Guardiola cavalcade, threshing its way through the games and the opponents and the four competitions. Ancelotti is a manager who occupies the same stratosphere as his City counterpart – a fellow multiple Champions League winner, a veteran of some of Europe’s biggest clubs – but even he had no clearer strategy than to cede permission and hope for the best. It was not pretty but there was an appealing stubbornness about Everton as they hurtled towards 90 minutes and the interesting question of what Guardiola’s team might be like in the energy-sapping finale of extra-time. The home team had defended and chased, they … [Read more...] about Manchester City reach FA Cup semi-finals as Kevin De Bruyne inspires win over Everton
