Since retiring from the Russian army in 2000, Colonel Mikhail Khodarenok has been an éminence grise of military affairs, regularly popping up on state television to give his analysis. He has been at it too long to be too afraid of the Kremlin. In February, he ridiculed as “fantasy” the idea that Ukraine could be easily conquered. On a primetime Rossiya-1 TV show earlier this week, he went further . “We are now in total geopolitical isolation,” he said. “We don’t want to admit it. But practically, the whole world is against us.” The host, Olga Skabeyeva, confronted him immediately. What about India and China, she asked: aren’t they worthy allies? “I’m looking at the bigger picture,” he replied. So is Joe Biden . This morning, he lands in Seoul as part of a five-day trip to salute the Asian flank of the new anti-Putin alliance. His visit makes a point that has not been lost on Colonel Khodarenok: this war is not (as Moscow TV so often says) Russia vs Nato, or Russia vs “the … [Read more...] about Vladimir Putin’s plot to dismantle the West has backfired spectacularly

US missiles could end Putin’s food blockade
The United States is considering sending Ukraine advanced anti-ship missiles to sink Russian war vessels in the Black Sea and end the Kremlin’s naval food blockade . US officials said sea-skimming Harpoon and Naval Strike Missiles [NSMs] could be dispatched, either directly, or by European allies equipped with them. A handful of nations were said to be open to sending Harpoons, which have a range of up to almost 300km, but there was hesitation over being the first to do so amid concerns over escalation. Vladimir Putin has been blocking Ukrainian ports to stop grain and other produce leaving the so-called “breadbasket of Europe”, triggering a global food crisis . The UN urged Russia to end the blockade and warned rising global food prices could lead to “mass hunger and famine”. Officials in the key Ukrainian port of Odesa told The Telegraph Putin was trying to starve the world’s poorest people. 'Craven and reckless' Ala Stoyanova, the deputy governor of the city, said: … [Read more...] about US missiles could end Putin’s food blockade
Why Pennsylvania points to Donald Trump being the 2024 Republican nominee
Republican primary elections in Pennsylvania this week were an early rune for 2024. When deciphered they point to Donald Trump once again being the party's presidential nominee. The highest-profile Trump-backed candidate in Pennsylvania was TV celebrity doctor Mehmet Oz, who is seeking the party's nomination for a Senate seat. With the vast majority of votes counted, Dr Oz appeared to be heading for a recount against a mainstream Republican, former hedge fund chief executive Dave McCormick. But regardless of whether he squeaks through, his performance shows the persisting depth of Republican support for Mr Trump. Dr Oz got 31 per cent of the 1.3 million votes cast, but 25 per cent went to the so-called "ultra-MAGA" candidate, political commentator Kathy Barnette. Together, their combined "Trump vote" accounted for 55 per cent. Mr McCormick got only 31 per cent. In a late-night appearance on election night, Dr Oz notably thanked Mr Trump before his family or … [Read more...] about Why Pennsylvania points to Donald Trump being the 2024 Republican nominee
Televangelist Pat Robertson predicts Trump win, then chaos and violence will erupt before asteroid brings end of world
WACKY televangelist Pat Robertson has claimed God told him Donald Trump will triumph in the upcoming election. The 90-year-old also warned of chaos in the wake of his victory — before bizarrely prophesying that an asteroid will slam into Earth and "maybe" spell the end of humankind. ⚠️ Follow our US election 2020 live blog for the latest news & updates Robertson told religious programme The 700 Club Trump would win the November 3 election "without question", although he urged viewers to vote nevertheless. He said: "Trump is going to win the election. "That doesn't mean you sit home and don't vote. "That means you get out and do everything you can to work, but he's going to win. "That's, I think, a given." Robertson's prophecy, however, does contradict most opinion polls, which show Democratic candidate Joe Biden several points ahead of Trump with just two weeks to go until election day. During his appearance on the programme, the televangelist also … [Read more...] about Televangelist Pat Robertson predicts Trump win, then chaos and violence will erupt before asteroid brings end of world
Russia ‘destroys cache of Western arms’ amid fierce fighting for east Ukraine
Russia claims it has destroyed a major consignment of Western weapons sent to Ukraine ’s army. The defence ministry in Moscow said it targeted a store in the west of the country by launching cruise missiles from the Black Sea. A statement claimed to have hit a ‘large batch of weapons and military equipment delivered from the USA and European countries’. Russia also says its bombs struck oil depots nears Odesa and shot down two fighter jets, as well as 14 drones. It’s unclear how much truth is in the Russian claims but invading forces are intensifying their efforts to seize the east of Ukraine after capturing Mariupol . The last fighters were told by their commanders to lay down their arms after a months-long defence ended with a brutal siege of the Azovstal steel plant. Kremlin forces continue to attempt a major offensive to take the entirety of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions. Its troops are digging in north of Kharkiv, according to the Institute for the … [Read more...] about Russia ‘destroys cache of Western arms’ amid fierce fighting for east Ukraine
Brexit: Minister says UK’s focus is peace in Northern Ireland as US warns trade deal at risk over protocol change
The international trade secretary has said the British government's first focus is to maintain peace in Northern Ireland after the US warned a trade deal with the UK is at risk if Westminster changes the protocol. US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said altering the protocol could damage the Good Friday Agreement, which aims to help maintain peace between Northern Ireland 's communities. The UK's international trade secretary, Anne-Marie Trevelyan, dismissed the warning as she said: "We have a £200bn trade relationship (with the US) that goes on day by day with all our businesses and that is fantastic. "But the British government's focus will always, first of all, be the sovereignty of the UK and ensuring the Good Friday Agreement can work as it was intended, to ensure peace and prosperity on the island of Ireland." Great British Bake Off to ‘relocate iconic tent’ as strict Covid rules dropped after 2 years of filming in bubbles
Filming for Great British Bake Off will be taking place in a brand-new spanking location this year, due to Covid bubbles no longer being needed. The Channel 4 show was one of the few that managed to continue going fairly normally, with the cast and crew sent off to Down Hall Hotel in Essex. They were all required to stay within a Covid bubble , which meant staying in the location for the whole six weeks the show took place. Contestants, crew and the judges were unable to go home at any point to visit their families while the process was ongoing. Now, it’s been reported Love Productions, who is behind the winning format, is on the hunt for a new location to prop up the Bake Off tent. An insider said: ’We won’t be filming in a bubble this year, but protocols will be in place to keep everyone safe. ‘All the team, particularly Prue [Leith], found it really tough not being able to go home each week.’ The source added to The Mirror : ‘They are delighted that … [Read more...] about Great British Bake Off to ‘relocate iconic tent’ as strict Covid rules dropped after 2 years of filming in bubbles
How farming solar panels became more profitable than crops
Rob Sturdy’s family have been farming land in North Yorkshire for three generations. But the family’s future was thrown into doubt in 2020, when they were informed that the landowners of the estate where they live and work hoped to turn half of their leased farm over to solar panels. “The land agent asked if we’d thought about taking up a new career, perhaps becoming fencing contractors,” says Rob’s wife Emma. “It was shocking. This is our livelihood, it’s our home.” Across the UK, fields that once grew wheat, barley and other foodstuffs are being transformed in order to harvest sunshine. The statistics are eye-opening. Encouraged by Government backing and a relatively easy planning regime, developers are targeting around 11,000 megawatt (MW) of new ground-mounted solar power, doubling the current capacity. Every MW of energy requires roughly three to four acres of solar panels, so, the panels would cover roughly 40,000 acres of land, much of it on British fields that would … [Read more...] about How farming solar panels became more profitable than crops
Modi accused of remaking India in his image after renaming world’s largest stadium after himself
The renaming of the world's largest cricket stadium after India's prime minister, has renewed accusations of narcissism and a growing personality cult around the nationalist leader, in the latest row over politically-driven name changes in the country. The announcement that the 132,000-seat venue formerly known as Sardar Patel Stadium in Ahmedabad would be become the Narendra Modi Stadium sparked delight in his supporters and scorn from political opponents. Mr Modi's gift for oratory and keen populist instincts have made him by far the most popular politician in India, and in 2019 won his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) a second term. Yet he has also attracted accusations of vanity and attempting to glorify himself as the founder of a new Hindu India. Critics last week asked whether the stadium's new name was an attempt to bolster his legacy with a relabelling spree. Dedicating sports stadiums to former prime ministers is common in India, but renaming such a high-profile venue for … [Read more...] about Modi accused of remaking India in his image after renaming world’s largest stadium after himself
