The majority of the all-wood play park equipment was destroyed at Stanwick Lakes near Irthlingborough, Northamptonshire, last year. More than £300,000 has been spent on the new wooden structure, which includes an assault course, large slide and a rope bridge. Executive director Kate Chadwick said she was "overwhelmed" by the support. She said she was "excited" to see the completed work, which began in June on the 750-acre Site of Special Scientific Interest managed by charity Rockingham Forest Trust. "We received overwhelming support from the local community and businesses in the immediate aftermath of the fire, so we know there are so many families looking forward to a visit this summer," said … [Read more...] about Stanwick Lakes: Play area reopens after arson attack

The right way to do a solo trip if you’re a single midlifer like me
By the time you read this, I’ll be a few days into a two-week regime otherwise known as my detox “holiday”. I’ll be sporting a unitard for the very first time since the age of three (a quick Google will provide all the visual info you require). Between sipping poo-hued juices, you will find me in the downward dog position wearing said unitard and imagining myself as the redheaded version of Gwyneth Paltrow, except with boobs, bum, curves and bigger hair. I’m excited to wear the unitard, not so thrilled about the yoga, given I’m as stiff as a gecko that’s been struck dead by lightning. All the gear and no idea. Let’s hope the doctors can stretcher me back to my room. I’m not a serial retreat-goer: the fitness retreat I attended in May was only four days long, so hardly enough time to get my head straight (which, apart from the wine and hormone-induced jelly belly, was half the reason I went). Before that, the last time I went away alone to eat lettuce and exercise vigorously on zero … [Read more...] about The right way to do a solo trip if you’re a single midlifer like me

“La dolce Riva”: Italy’s classic wooden motorboats
Alberto Galassi is raving about his Riva, a 1970 wooden Aquarama, formed of cedar from Lebanon and mahogany. The CEO of the Ferretti Group, which now owns the Riva boat brand , he took correspondent Seth Doane on a ride on Italy's picturesque Lake Iseo, racing past Riva's factory. "Riva is beyond boating; Riva is a myth," Galassi said of the classic Riva speedboats, which have been in the hands of royalty, movie stars, rock stars and tycoons. "Let's be honest. I mean, when you say, 'I have a Ferrari,' you need to say you 'have a car'? Everybody knows what a Ferrari is. Riva is the same thing." Riva's Aquarama, designed by Carlo Riva, debuted in 1962 during the glamorous la dolce vita years of Italy's post-war boom. Stars including Sophia Loren, Brigitte Bardot and Elizabeth Taylor owned Rivas, and the boat itself played a supporting role in dozens of films , from "It Started in Naples" and "Oceans Twelve" to "Men in Black: International." And talk about product placement: … [Read more...] about “La dolce Riva”: Italy’s classic wooden motorboats
A visit to Andy Griffith’s “Mayberry,” a town that never was
This report was originally broadcast September 19, 2021. That tall, amiable sheriff and his little boy, Opie, heading to a fishing hole on the outskirts of Mayberry, North Carolina, at the start of "The Andy Griffith Show," were actually strolling along a lake in Beverly Hills, California. Ron Howard, the actor who played Opie, is now one of Hollywood's top directors. Most of the other stars – Andy Griffith; Don Knotts, who played his deputy, Barney Fife; and the actors who played Aunt Bee and Floyd the Barber – they've all passed on. After all, it's been 54 years since Andy left the show. So, it may come as something of a surprise to learn that Mayberry is doing just fine, even though its actual name is Mount Airy, and its only genuine link to "The Andy Griffith Show" is that Griffith was born and grew up here. "Andy Griffith, God bless him, if he had not been born in this particular little town, we wouldn't be standing here having that conversation," said Randy Collins, … [Read more...] about A visit to Andy Griffith’s “Mayberry,” a town that never was
Exact time heatwave will end as 35C scorcher to give way to flash floods and STORMS… with Met Office warnings across UK
BRITS can expect another day of sizzling temperatures but the weather is due to change dramatically, with flash floods and storms just around the corner. An amber weather warning from the Met Office is currently in place and lasts until 11.59pm on Sunday which cover large parts of the south, east, west, the Midlands and the north of England with temperatures today expected to hit 32C. Lincolnshire Police confirmed a teenage boy died on Saturday after getting into the sea at Skegness after temperatures reached more than 30C in some parts of England. It came after a body was found in a Doncaster lake earlier that day following reports that a man in his 20s had got into difficulty in the water. Thick fog turns beaches grey and spooky despite soaring temperatures
The heatwave is in full swing and the sun is shining – but you wouldn’t have known it if you’d popped to the beach in the North East today. Cloudless skies greeted most this morning but a thick North Sea fog which rolled in overnight rather put a dampener on things. Beaches on Tyneside and Teesside looked more like a dreary winter day despite the soaring temperatures. People living on the coast took to Twitter to complain about fog horns blaring throughout the morning. The Met Office has warned weather conditions are going to become more mixed and less predictable in the coming days. While extreme temperatures and drought conditions are expected to persist in southern England, the picture is very different up north. Flood warnings are in place for some areas with stormy downpours expected to break out widely . A lower-level yellow warning for thunderstorms is in place from noon on Sunday until 6am on Monday for most of Scotland and Northern Ireland.
