Fancy seeing you here! Peregrine falcon swoops on parakeet in unlikely mid-air battle over LONDON then takes it home to teach its chicks how to hunt
A peregrine falcon catches a parakeet in mid-air with its talons as it teaches its chick how to hunt. The peregrine caught the rose-ringed bird in mid-air with a single strike from its sharp talons, then approached its nest to entice its chicks into the air and help them hone their flying skills. The series of pictures were captured by London-based wildlife photographer David Element, 64, who had been following the development of four peregrine chicks being raised in South London. The young peregrine catches the parakeet in its talons. The young bird flew around with it for a while before landing, plucking and eating the prey. Strictly’s Motsi Mabuse on racism, motherhood and shaking up this year’s show
MOTSI Mabuse might well spend Christmas Day collapsed in an exhausted heap. For the past three months Strictly Come Dancing’s newest judge has been mainly functioning on pure adrenalin, flying back and forth between filming commitments in the UK and her home in Germany, while also running her dance school and being mum to a lively 15-month-old daughter. Dress, Forever Unique - buy now And as we head towards the Strictly grand final next weekend, she says she’s expecting the crazy schedule to catch up with her any day now. “Maybe because I’m excited all the time, my body is keeping up… So far! I haven’t felt exhaustion yet. Probably on Christmas Day it’ll suddenly hit me. “I’ve travelled all my life as a dancer, although I have a baby now so there’s a big difference and I’m very careful about what time I spend away from home and where I am. So it’s been a balancing act,” she says. South-African-born Motsi, … [Read more...] about Strictly’s Motsi Mabuse on racism, motherhood and shaking up this year’s show
How Azzedine Alaïa changed the way we see women’s bodies
The king is dead; long live the king. Azzedine Alaïa’s heart failed last November, but his presence will be more keenly felt in Britain this year than ever before. A major exhibition opens at the Design Museum in May, with his first London boutique coming to New Bond Street before that. After the outpouring of emotion on his death – from Naomi Campbell, who lived with him as a teenage model and always called him Papa; from the Parisian great-and-good who ate couscous at his table; from the clients who worshipped how he made them look – 2018 will be the year when Alaïa is recognised not just as the man who changed what models wore, but as the man who changed what we all wore. “For me, fashion is the body,” Alaïa said in 1982. The rest of us took a little while to catch up, but we certainly got there in the end. Since the mid-80s, the skin and curve and flesh and muscle of women’s bodies have been the beating heart of how we want to … [Read more...] about How Azzedine Alaïa changed the way we see women’s bodies
Female high school athletes file discrimination complaint claiming that allowing transgender athletes to compete in women’s events has cost them top finishes and scholarships
Three Connecticut girls who have run high school track have filed a federal discrimination complaint saying a statewide policy on transgender athletes has cost them top finishes in races and possibly college scholarships. The complaint filed Monday with the U.S. Education Department's Office for Civil Rights was submitted by the conservative Christian law firm Alliance Defending Freedom on behalf of the girls, who are asking for an investigation of the policy and orders that would make competitions fair. The complaint also cites the federal Title IX rules aimed at equal rights in sports for female athletes.
