THE Remainers have lost the plot. Laughably, they claim that they somehow “won” the European elections. All you need to do is combine the votes of a bunch of different parties, pretend the Tories don’t back Brexit and, hey presto, you’ve got a crushing victory. It’s time for a reality check. The public have just made the Brexit Party the biggest party not just in Britain but in the entirety of the European Parliament. The message from the electorate was frustration with the dog’s dinner that Britain’s two biggest parliamentary parties have made of Brexit. Nothing more, nothing less. It wasn’t a demand to revoke Article 50 or for a second referendum. It wasn’t a sign people have changed their mind. It was simply a damning verdict on the collective incompetence of Britain’s two establishment parties, and one that will almost certainly be repeated at a General Election if it happens soon. Nigel Farage managed to build a brand new … [Read more...] about Remainers have lost the plot over Brexit and EU vote should be a wake-up call for Westminster

The Liberal Democrats have taken their battle to force ITV to include Jo Swinson in its leaders' debate to the High Court. The party has launched a bid for a judicial review of the decision, claiming the broadcaster has excluded Remain supporting voices. The debate will feature a head-to-head between Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn and Boris Johnson. Mr Swinson had said earlier in the week that her party would take legal action if ITV did not include her in the debate, scheduled for 19 November. Outside the Royal Courts of Justice, Liberal Democrat Party President Sal Brinton said: "The TV debates offer the only chance for people to see how leaders compare to each other directly, in a neutral, equal and balanced format. For many people this is the moment they decide how they will vote. Brexit debate represented at the top table of the Leaders’ debates. Liberal Democrats , on behalf of all those who want our democracy to remain fair and balanced, are legally challenging ITV … [Read more...] about Liberal Democrats take bid to force ITV to include Jo Swinson in election debates to High Court
Nigel Farage claimed he had killed off a second referendum The leader of the Brexit party declared his party would not stand candidates in the 317 seats won by the Conservatives in 2017. The exact impact is still a matter of debate, but it is almost certainly the most significant electoral boost the Tories have had in the campaign so far. In a speech in Hartlepool (full text here), Farage claimed his decision meant a “leave alliance” was now in operation: I have got no great love for the Conservative party at all. But I can see right now that by giving Boris half a chance, by keeping him honest and holding him to account by getting people in, and by stopping the fanatics in the Liberal Democrats who’d sign us up to everything, wouldn’t they, the United States of Europe, European army, you name it, I mean they even want to revoke the result of the referendum. No, I think our action … prevents a second referendum from happening and that to me I think right … [Read more...] about Andrew Sparrow’s election briefing: The best news Boris Johnson has had so far?
brexit countdown_bg Created with Sketch. Boris Johnson received a major boost over his highly controversial decision to shut down Parliament ahead of Brexit today as senior judges said it could not be legally challenged. After the Prime Minister's divisive move to prorogue the Commons for five weeks, sparking Remainer uproar, was deemed illegal by judges in Scotland, the High Court in London revealed that it viewed the situation completely differently. In giving their reasons for throwing out a case brought by Remainer businesswoman Gina Miller, justices in London said the decision which closed down parliament on Monday was 'purely political' and therefore 'not a matter for the courts'. The ruling will calm Brexiteer nerves ahead of a dramatic legal showdown at the Supreme Court on Tuesday, where the UK's highest legal authority will have to decide which judicial decision is the right one. Ms Miller's claim - which was supported by former prime minister Sir John Major, … [Read more...] about Boost for Boris Johnson as ENGLISH judges say PM’s Parliament shutdown CANNOT be legally challenged – hours after it was deemed illegal by Scottish court
THE fallout from the Brexit vote has led Britain to its second general election in three years. But what does it mean for the chances of a second referendum and how could another public vote still happen? Could a second referendum happen after the election? Opponents of Brexit have long called for a second referendum with Remain as an option, but votes earlier this year saw MPs reject the idea. A second public vote is now less likely than it looked even a few months ago, but there are a number of ways it could still result from the coming general election. The most likely route is through a Labour victory. Labour has said that if it forms the next government, it would look to renegotiate a Brexit deal with stronger trade ties and then put that deal to a public vote within six months. That's a strategy it could pursue either having won a majority outright, or as a minority government with the backing of the Lib Dems, SNP, and/ or Greens. The approach would rely on the EU being willing … [Read more...] about Second Brexit referendum – could it still happen and how?
