Labour party chiefs knew about allegations that one of their MPs was a vicious wife beater but still allowed him to stand for election, it can be revealed. Secret court information was leaked to party officials in a bid to thwart the MP’s ballot box bid during the general election in June last year. But the abuse claims – which are extremely grave - were brushed under the carpet. A dossier detailing sickening alleged domestic abuse carried out by the MP was first handed over to local officials in his constituency party. The Sun has also been told that senior staff at Labour HQ in London were also notified about it before polling day. But it is also believed they didn’t act either. If the male MP is found to have deceived voters, he could come under overwhelming pressure to stand down and spark a very difficult by-election for Labour. The wife beating claims have now spread among Labour MPs and sparked fury at a meeting of the women’s Parliamentary Labour Party … [Read more...] about Labour party chiefs knew about domestic violence allegations against one of their MPs – but still allowed him to stand for election

EDDIE Izzard is most famed for being a stand-up comedian - but he is so much more than that. We take a look at Eddie's life, career and his incredible talent for running marathons... Is Eddie Izzard involved with the Labour Party? Eddie Izzard was appointed to the Labour National Executive Committee (NEC) after controversial Labour official Christine Shawcroft resigned amid allegations of anti-Semitism. Last night she said: “It is clear that my continued membership of the NEC has become a distraction for the party. “I reaffirm my complete opposition to anti-Semitism and my abhorrence of Holocaust denial, and support all measures to tackle this within the party.” Because he finished second in a January NEC election, he took her place by default. What have been Eddie's career highlights? Eddie's big breakthrough came in 1991, when he appeared in an AIDS fundraiser at the London Palladium. How old is Eddie Izzard and what is his background? It took three years of waiting – and interview bids to four successive Jeremy Corbyn spokespeople – before the call finally came on Tuesday evening. To say I was in shock (my colleagues at Jewish News and many in the community had long said it would never happen) would be an understatement, but I wondered whether this represented something of a turning point. After the Board of Deputies and Jewish Leadership Council went further than they had before in condemning the lacklustre approach of Labour and its leader to antisemitism, Corbyn was forced to do likewise. He publicly listed various examples of contemporary antisemitism, recognised some cases had been dealt with too slowly and apologised for “pockets” of hate in the party: these were all important steps. Away from a drafted statement, my interview with Corbyn for a Jewish newspaper could be seen as an attempt to start rebuilding relations. If not to move … [Read more...] about I interviewed Jeremy Corbyn hoping he’d reassure the Jewish community over antisemitism in the Labour Party: he didn’t
Given some of the coverage of antisemitism in the Labour Party, it’s probably necessary, extraordinarily, to acknowledge that the Leader of the Opposition is not an antisemite. He appears sincere when he says that he has dedicated his life to fighting racism in all its forms, and that his own mother fought alongside the Jewish community to block the fascist Blackshirts in the infamous Cable Street Riot of 1936. There is no evidence that Mr Corbyn himself discriminates against Jewish people who work for or with him in the Labour Party. Indeed the letter sent by Mr Corbyn to Jewish leaders, though it took too long to materialise, contains some recognition on his part that he has some understanding of what is at stake. In reference to his past support for a blatantly antisemitic mural, Mr Corbyn has at last, after a stubborn period of silence, come out and said “sorry” for “not having studied the content of the mural more closely before wrongly … [Read more...] about Jeremy Corbyn took too long to apologise for antisemitism within the Labour Party
PUBLISHED: 17:00 19 March 2018 | UPDATED: 17:48 19 March 2018 Harry Taylor Columnist, author and campaigner Owen Jones was in Camden on Saturday, supporting the Labour candidates for Frognal and Fitzjohns Archant Only mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun. Or so the saying goes. However it was only Camden’s political activists and left-wing campaigner Owen Jones who braved the snow on a freezing Saturday morning. Mr Jones was in Hampstead as part of his ‘unseat’ campaign running across the country. The day’s event was the only part of the campaign taking place in a Labour borough, with Jones knocking on doors in Frognal and Fitzjohns in support of Labour candidates Gail McAnena Wood, Rebecca Shirazi and Richard Chadwick. Talking to the Ham&High before the day’s campaigning, Mr Jones said one of the reasons he was hitting streets in the area was to help get rid of three Brexit supporting candidates with a poor record of holding … [Read more...] about ‘Antisemitism is a sickening cancer’ says Labour Party campaigner Owen Jones during Camden visit
