JEREMY Corbyn has been urged to rule out a second Brexit vote once and for all as one of the country’s biggest trade unions is calling for a second EU referendum. The GMB, who have handed over hundreds of thousands of pounds to the Labour leader and his party in the past few years, say people deserve a final say on the deal Theresa May brings back from Brussels. In a statement today they claim that promises made during the campaign in 2016 are “not the reality we are facing”. But the Tories are urging Mr Corbyn to “stand up to his union paymasters” and remain firm in his commitment to honour the original decision of the electorate. The GMB union said it had consulted thousands of its 620,000 members, and there was widespread support for holding another ballot once the negotiations are complete. Its general secretary Tim Roache said: "Sitting on the sidelines watching the mess this Government is making of Brexit is infuriating, because there is so much at … [Read more...] about Jeremy Corbyn urged to rule out a second Brexit vote for good after his big union backer calls for a second EU referendum

Theresa May today rules out a second EU referendum in her strongest terms yet. The PM has been rattled by the success of the People’s Vote campaign to reverse Brexit. Remain MPs behind the group want voters to have another say on whether to quit the EU. But as they return from Parliament’s summer recess, Mrs May insists the 2016 referendum result must stand as the people have made their decision. It says: “We’re heading for a botched Brexit .” Labour is divided on the issue, but the party’s official position is not to rule out a second … [Read more...] about Theresa May today rules out a second EU referendum

Was the June 2016 plebiscite not a people’s vote? Or do they just think the wrong people won? There are countless practical objections to holding a second referendum. It would take time that the country does not have, requiring the passage of an Act of Parliament and therefore the support of a majority of MPs. This is one of the reasons why the People’s Vote campaign, with the support of some unions, is seeking to amend Labour Party policy on the matter. There is also the question of what the... 0 Have your say Civil disobedience and social disruption could emerge if a second EU referendum is held, a shadow cabinet minister has suggested. Barry Gardiner warned people could turn to “more socially-disruptive ways of expressing their views” if they feel they have been denied achieving change through democratic means, also saying the extreme right would be aided by such a situation.Pro-EU campaigners are seeking a second vote on the terms of the final Brexit deal between the UK and EU.Shadow international trade secretary Mr Gardiner, speaking on the BBC Radio 4 Today programme, said Remain and Leave campaigners informed people that voting in the 2016 EU referendum would determine the UK’s future for the next 40 or 50 years. He added: “We meant it. If we then go back on that, yes, it may well be – and I certainly believe – that we will in the short and medium term be worse off economically as a result of Brexit, and … [Read more...] about Holding a second EU referendum could lead to ‘civil disobedience’
