REMAINERS have been calling for a second EU referendum since the moment Britain voted to leave on 23 June 2016. But growing support among Leavers to stage a re-run and kill off anti-Brexit remoaning for good has gained momentum — but could it happen, and what has been said? What has Tony Blair said about a second referendum? Tony Blair, a firm supporter of the European project who campaigned fiercely for Remain, has said Theresa May will eventually be forced into calling a second referendum. Blair believes the PM will have no option once her Brexit deal is blocked by a Commons which contains arch Leavers and Remainers and a pro Eu House of Lords. Mr Blair told BBC Radio 4's World At One: "I think there is a real possibility of an impasse in Parliament. "If there isn’t really a majority for any one form of Brexit, then I do think the case is ever more stronger for going back to their people to allow them a final say on the deal." What did Nigel Farage say about a second EU … [Read more...] about Will there be a second EU referendum, what was the result of the Brexit vote and what have Tony Blair and Nigel Farage said?

A North East MEP has hit back at calls for a new EU referendum. Five North East MPs have joined forces to demand a second referendum on Brexit, claiming that the region could suffer more harm than any other part of the country from leaving the European Union. But the proposal was criticised by North East MEP Jonathan Arnott, a supporter of Brexit. He said there had been numerous public votes already, including the 2016 referendum in which voters backed leaving the EU. Mr Arnott, an independent MEP, said: “We have already had a referendum. We had a general election in 2015 where the Conservatives said that if they won we would have a referendum. “Before that in 2014 we had European elections that were won by an anti-EU party. “In the 2017 general election only one party, the Liberal Democrats, campaigned on the platform being set out by these MPs, and they did very badly. “So it seems to me to be pretty settled. There’s no need to have yet another vote … [Read more...] about The calls from five North East MPs for a second EU referendum come under fire
More than 4 million people have signed a petition calling for a re-run of the EU referendum following Britain's vote for Brexit. The petition, set up by William Oliver Healey, states: "We the undersigned call upon HM Government to implement a rule that if the Remain or Leave vote is less than 60% based on a turnout less than 75%, there should be another referendum.” Originally launched in May, the page has seen an influx of signatories since Friday, as those unhappy with the referendum result seek to overturn it. The campaign is more than double the size of a 2007 petition urging the Government to abandon plans for pay as you go road pricing which attracted 1.8 million signatures. The petition for a second EU referendum has also gathered far more names than one calling for the meningitis B vaccine to be given to all children, which was signed by more than 820,000 at the beginning of 2016, and one seeking to block Donald Trump from the UK after he … [Read more...] about Petition for second EU referendum reaches 4 million as hundreds attend anti-Brexit protest in London

The claims centre around Vote Leave’s links to another campaign - BeLeave - which it helped fund.Shahmir Sanni, who worked on the campaign, claimed Vote Leave used it to get around strict spending limits set by the Electoral Commission.Vote Leave has strongly denied wrongdoing and said the £625,000 donated to BeLeave was within the rules. But Mr Sanni told Channel 4 News: “I know that Vote Leave cheated ... I know that people have been lied to and that the referendum wasn’t legitimate.”Mr Sanni was in a relationship with senior Vote Leave figure Stephen Parkinson - now Theresa May’s political secretary - at the time of the referendum and claimed through his lawyers he was “outed” by the Number 10 aide in the run-up to the Channel 4 disclosure.Mr Sanni went to the Electoral Commission … [Read more...] about Brexit: Whistleblower claims Vote Leave ‘cheated’ in EU referendum
With less than a year to go until the UK’s formal exit from the European Union, calls for a second referendum on the terms of Brexit are gathering pace. In an article in The Guardian, shadow Northern Ireland secretary Owen Smith said his party could only “serve democracy” by recommending a poll on the Brexit deal. Last month Jeremy Corbyn announced Labour wanted the UK to be a permanent member of a customs union with the EU after Brexit. But Smith, who unsuccessfully challenged Corbyn for the Labour leadership in 2016, says that this is not enough. “Labour needs to do more than just back a soft Brexit or guarantee a soft border in Ireland,” he argues. “Given that it is increasingly obvious that the promises which the Brexiters made to the voters, especially, not only their pledge of an additional £350m a week for the NHS, are never going to be honoured, we have the right to ask if Brexit remains the right choice for the country. And to ask, too, … [Read more...] about Brexit: What are the pros and cons of a second EU referendum?
