Who is Danish TED Talk star Özlem Cekic and why is she in this week’s news?

Photo: Sofie Mathiassen/Ritzau Scanpix Özlem Cekic, a former MP and advocate of a project called ‘Dialogue Coffee’, reached new levels of prominence this week after being invited to give a prestigious TED Talk in New York City. The popular TED Talks are often watched by millions after being posted on the organisation’s YouTube channel, and that could prove to be the case for Cekic after she spoke at the We The Future conference in New York earlier this week. Kurdish Fighters Selling US-Supplied Weapons on Black Market – Reports
Just as Washington has ramped up its support for Kurdish units in Syria, the fighters are selling their US-made weapons on the black market to make up for their expenses, the Arabic-language Daily Sabah reported, citing local sources in Northern Syria. In keeping with an agreement between the US and Turkey, the Kurdish forces are to withdraw from Manbij and other areas west of the Euphrates River and surrender their weapons to the UN before the end of this year. According to the sources, the Kurdish fighters fear that once they have handed over their weapons, Turkey might launch a new military operation against them in Northern Syria. The US has delivered light and heavy weapons on a large number of trucks to the Kurdish forces in northern Syria under the pretext of fighting Daesh, Fars News reported. © AFP 2018 / Delil SOULEIMANUS Dispatches More … [Read more...] about Kurdish Fighters Selling US-Supplied Weapons on Black Market – Reports
The risk of misreading the message of Kurdish votes
To have a healthy analysis of election results you first have to have reliable input. The controversy over claims of vote irregularities is still in the air and it is the responsibility of the governing party as well as opposition parties to clear the air. It might be in the interest of the governing party to keep the fog, as it fuels debates within opposition parties and has a demoralizing impact among their supporters. So although their stance is unacceptable, it is explainable. However, the only reason stopping opposition parties from coming to the fore and from being held accountable for their failure to crosscheck the results could only be their anxiety to reveal their incompetence. As long as they keep continuing to hide their incompetence, they should not expect to increase their voting basis, as no supporters of the ruling party will be convinced to trust state matters into the hands of the opposition. As in the past, we will have to rely on the analysis of certain polling … [Read more...] about The risk of misreading the message of Kurdish votes
