Plan to reduce sewage in rivers is shelved by the Government
Official plans to reduce the amount of raw sewage that is dumped in rivers and lakes across the country have been delayed by the Government, it has emerged. Ministers were due to publish a strategy outlining how they would tackle what they call the “unacceptable” levels of sewage discharge by next month. But the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has quietly shelved this until a future date, saying the plan will now be published “in due course”. An investigation by The Telegraph earlier this year found that water companies are releasing raw sewage into rivers more than 1,000 times a day despite being told to do so only when there is heavy rainfall. Raw sewage was discharged into rivers and coastal areas for more than 3.1 million hours on more than 400,000 occasions throughout 2020, according to data from the Environment Agency. Jim McMahon, the shadow environment secretary, accused water companies of “ routinely dumping raw sewage in our rivers , … [Read more...] about Plan to reduce sewage in rivers is shelved by the Government
Man with tropical jungle in garden stores GALLONS of rainwater in face of drought
A green-fingered man has stored thousands of litres of rainwater , to protect his 25-year-old exotic garden from the looming drought. Mike Clifford, 61, has spent decades turning the plot behind his suburban bungalow into a tropical jungle full of rare plants. Despite being only 65ft long and 35ft wide, the garden is packed with extraordinary species native to South and Central America, Africa, and China. Many of his plants have bloomed months earlier than expected due to the record-breaking heat. But others, which are used to warm and moist climates, are at risk of dying due to the shortage of rain. Parts of the UK have been hit by water shortages ahead of a Met Office amber warning for extreme heat coming into force this week, while Thames Water on Tuesday announced it would bring in a temporary hosepipe ban. Anne Heche blood tests show ‘signs of narcotics’ as actress is ‘not expected to survive’ crash
Preliminary blood tests have shown "signs of narcotics" in Anne Heche's system as her family said she is "not expected to survive" the fiery car crash which left her in a coma. The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) has said additional testing is required to rule out any substances that were administered in hospital. It comes as LAPD spokesman Matthew Cruz has confirmed the crash is being investigated as a felony driving-under-the-influence (DUI) traffic collision. He added that preliminary blood tests "did show signs of narcotics". Law enforcement sources told celebrity news site TMZ that Heche was found to be under the influence of cocaine at the time of the crash.
