Coronavirus news UK – Over-56s invited for vaccine and ministers ‘looking at’ longer school day & shorter holidays

· March 7, 2021 ·

BRITS aged between 56 and 59 have been invited to receive their coronavirus vaccine as the rollout goes from strength to strength. It comes as Gavin Williamson admitted this morning that ministers are "looking at" a longer school day and shorter holidays to make up for lost education due to the pandemic . Hundreds of thousands of letters for the over 56 age group began landing on doorsteps today, Public Health England have said. Meanwhile, Professor Sharon Peacock, head of the Covid-19 Genomics UK scientific body, told The Times she was "very optimistic" that the immunisation programme would continue to be effective. It comes as a minister predicted that all adults could receive the jab by June should the vaccine rollout continue at its current pace. Kwasi Kwarteng, the business secretary, told The Times it was “possible” that all adults could be offered vaccines by June. I’m a meteorite dealer who makes millions selling space rocks – I’ve been kidnapped and robbed in the brutal trade

· March 7, 2021 ·

WITH a machete at his throat and a gun at his head, Mike Farmer noticed the kid holding the firearm was shaking – they were scared, and that made the situation even more dangerous. "I was just thinking: 'I'm glad my wife stayed at the hotel today – this sucks, I'm actually going to die here'," Mike tells The Sun. It was 2011 in Kenya and he'd been beaten, abducted and driven into the jungle by thieves who knew he had cash – lots of it. That's because Mike, 48, is a meteorite hunter from Tucson, Arizona. He sells his extraterrestrial minerals to amateur astronomers and billionaire businessmen alike, all of whom want to get their hands on a tangible emissary from outer space. A fireball over the skies of Britain last Sunday alone could have scattered thousands of rocks in the fields below. And while the financial and scientific rewards in finding meteorites are great, so are the risks – but Mike lives for the thrill of the chase. "I see myself as like Indiana … [Read more...] about I’m a meteorite dealer who makes millions selling space rocks – I’ve been kidnapped and robbed in the brutal trade

FAYE Brookes' life is almost as colourful as that of her former Corrie character Kate Connor. The actress hit the headlines in 2019 for splitting up with her long-time beau and fiance Gareth Gates - again - and she's now a contestant on this year's series of Dancing On Ice . Ten of Britain’s most dangerous convicted terrorists could be freed after lockdown

· March 7, 2021 ·

TEN of Britain’s most dangerous convicted terrorists are hoping to be free after lockdown. The fanatics are bidding for early release on parole. They include Parviz Khan, 50, from Birmingham, jailed for life in 2008 for plotting to kidnap a Muslim British soldier and behead him. Jawad Akbar, 37, from Crawley, West Sussex, has had his case referred to the Parole Board. He was jailed for life in 2007 for his part in a plot to bomb shopping centres, clubs and the gas network. His bid, backed by legal aid, could cost taxpayers £50,000. Others seeking freedom include Brits who wanted to join IS fighters in Iraq, or who posted vile videos online. Chris Phillips, ex-head of the National Counter Terrorism Security Office, said: “Early release for any would be unthinkable, and a huge gamble with lives.” Eilish O’Gara, from think-tank the Henry Jackson Society, said: “They must not be freed even if there is a shred of doubt.” Most read in UK News … [Read more...] about Ten of Britain’s most dangerous convicted terrorists could be freed after lockdown

COVID-19: Parents divided over proposals to help school children catch up on missed learning

· March 7, 2021 ·

Parents have mixed feelings about proposals to help school children catch up on missed learning. All schools in England will reopen tomorrow, as part of Boris Johnson's four-step plan for leading the country out of lockdown and back to normality. It follows nearly a year of disruption for school children, with face-to-face teaching replaced by online learning. Schools have remained open during the third coronavirus lockdown for vulnerable children and the children of key workers, but many pupils have had to contend with remote learning. As a result, a variety of options are being mulled over by ministers in a bid to help children catch up.
