1. First wheat export under UN deal as two more ships leave Ukraine Two more ships left Ukraine's Black Sea ports on Friday, including one laden with the first Ukrainian wheat to be exported under a UN-brokered deal, Turkey's defence ministry said. A total 14 ships have now departed from Ukraine over the past two weeks, following the deal with Russia to allow a resumption of grain exports from Ukraine's Black Sea ports, after they were stalled for five months due to the war. The Belize-flagged Sormovsky left Ukraine's Chornomorsk port on Friday, the Turkish ministry said, carrying 3,050 tonnes of wheat to Turkey's northwestern Tekirdag province. It was the first shipment of wheat from Ukraine, which, along with Russia, accounted for nearly a third of global wheat exports before February 24, when Moscow launched its full invasion of its neighbour. Ukraine has some 20 million tonnes of grain left over from last year's crop, while this year's wheat harvest is also … [Read more...] about Ukraine war: Wheat export ships leave ports, Kyiv in POWs appeal, EU mulls Russia visa ban

Ukraine war: Refugees find solace at a Berlin art collective
Sofiia Yesakova is hard at work, creating a large-scale drawing that represents the Ukrainian soldiers that have died defending their homeland. For a long time, art seemed pointless, but moving into a Ukrainian art collective in Berlin has helped. "For the first two months I couldn’t pick up a pencil or a brush, couldn’t think about anything" she explains. "Everything seemed useless and meaningless because the war was on. "People were dying so what could I possibly draw? But when I arrived here, and for the last two weeks in Kyiv, I stopped despairing and I started to draw". The art collective, called the Ukrainian Cultural Community , has been set up with the help of German organisations and funding. Eighteen Ukrainian artists are living here, in a 500-square metre flat that used to be a brothel, right in the centre of the German capital. Ukraine war must end with liberation of Crimea – Zelensky
By Francesca Gillett Published 2 days ago comments Comments Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Related Topics Russia-Ukraine war The war in Ukraine began with Crimea and must end with its liberation, President Volodymyr Zelensky has said. Ukraine's president was speaking after a string of explosions hit a Russian airbase there, killing one person. Mr Zelensky did not mention Tuesday's blasts but said: "Crimea is Ukrainian and we will never give it up." Russia's defence ministry said ammunition detonated at the base. Meanwhile, Ukraine denied any responsibility for the explosions. In a separate development, Ukrainian officials say 13 people were killed in overnight Russian strikes in the central Dnipropetrovsk region, and another one in the Zaporizhzhia region in the south. Ukraine war: Crimea blasts significantly hit Russian navy – UK
By George Wright Published 3 hours ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Related Topics Russia-Ukraine war Blasts at a Russian-operated airfield in Crimea this week have "significantly degraded" its navy's Black Sea fleet, the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) says. The Saky base in the west of Russian-ruled Crimea was rocked by a string of blasts on Tuesday, killing one person. The blasts led to the loss of eight Russian combat jets, the MoD said in its daily intelligence update. Ukraine has not claimed responsibility, but satellite images suggest the possibility of a targeted attack. The cause of the blasts is unclear, but at least five fighter-bombers and three multi-role jets were "almost certainly destroyed or seriously damaged", the statement says. The loss of eight combat jets will make only a minor dent in Moscow's overall fleet of aircraft, … [Read more...] about Ukraine war: Crimea blasts significantly hit Russian navy – UK
Battle for Kherson will test Ukraine’s infantry and artillery – but it won’t end the war
An army is trapped on a riverbank, bridges blown behind them, without hope of rescue or escape. If it sounds familiar, it’s because it is. The coming battle of Kherson will in many ways be a reversal of May’s struggle for Severodonetsk, where Ukraine found itself trying to maintain an ever-dwindling bridgehead supplied by constantly shelled bridges. “The way the Ukrainians are going about that is knocking out the bridges over the Dnipro, thereby limiting the logistical support and therefore the availability of things like artillery on the Western bank,” said Jack Watling of the Royal United Services Institute. “What we are seeing in terms of tactical actions are small opportunistic advances along multiple axes to roll the Russians into a tighter and tighter pocket along the river. “It could work. If the Russians are not able to reinforce, it could bring about a collapse of Russian will to fight in Kherson and achieve retaking the city at some point.” Four bridges are key … [Read more...] about Battle for Kherson will test Ukraine’s infantry and artillery – but it won’t end the war
Russian forces bombard Sumy region 200 times in one day: Ukraine
The governor of a region in northeastern Ukraine says the Russian military opened a daylong bombardment of multiple towns that didn't result in casualties but left buildings and crops damaged. Dmytro Zhivytskyi, governor of the Sumy administrative district, said in a Telegram post Friday that Russian forces launched a total of nearly 200 missile strikes that began in the morning and lasted into the evening. The accusation is only the latest involving Russian forces bombarding Sumy, which shares a border with Russia. Zhivytskyi said in the post that the attack began at 11 a.m. Friday in the communities of Yunakivka and Khotin that involved mortar shelling, a rocket salvo, artillery and an airstrike. A wheat field was burned as the result of the shelling and damages are being calculated, he said. Russian forces after 1 p.m. targeted the Mykolaivka village with a total of 60 strikes, according to Zhivytskyi. Later that afternoon, Esman was attacked and shelled with over 40 … [Read more...] about Russian forces bombard Sumy region 200 times in one day: Ukraine
Retreat from Kherson or be ‘annihilated’, Ukraine warns Russia
Russian troops will be “annihilated” unless they retreat from the southern city of Kherson, Ukraine warned on Wednesday after it struck a key bridge with US-supplied rockets . Kyiv’s strafing of the Antonovsky bridge with precise, long-range Himars rocket launchers marks the opening salvo in Ukraine’s counter-offensive to retake the strategic city, likely to be the site of the next big battle as fighting in the Donbas slows. The 1000-metre-long bridge, which Russian forces rely on to resupply the occupied city, has been left “completely unusable”, according to a Western official. That will make it much harder for Moscow to move heavy armour into Kherson - or take its troops out in personnel carriers. “Ukraine’s Kherson counteroffensive is now gathering pace,” the official added. “As with so many wars, one central part of the campaign is boiling down to a race to seize and destroy bridges.” The Ukrainian Defence Ministry warned “Russian occupiers in … [Read more...] about Retreat from Kherson or be ‘annihilated’, Ukraine warns Russia

Ukraine ‘will recapture Kherson by September’
The Russian-occupied southern region of Kherson will be recaptured by September, a Ukrainian official said on Sunday. Sergey Khlan, an aide to the ousted Ukrainian head of the Kherson region, said Ukrainian forces backed up by sophisticated Western weapons, including long-range Himars, were defeating Russia’s army around the region . “Kherson region will definitely be liberated by September," Mr Khlan said in an interview with Ukrainian television. "We can say that a turning point has occurred on the battlefield." He added: "We see that our armed forces are advancing openly. We can say that we are switching from defensive to counter-offensive actions." The arrival of Himars in Ukraine in June changed the momentum of the war because the country is now able to hit Russian supply lines, command centres and other infrastructure, causing widespread damage. The targets had previously been too far behind the front line to strike. Not only have the Himars stalled the … [Read more...] about Ukraine ‘will recapture Kherson by September’
‘I was raped in Ukraine by a Russian soldier – he was the same age as my son’
It is only when Viktoria Martsyniuk feels the soft, gloopy clay running through her fingers that she allows herself to think about what happened to her one awful night in March this year. The invading Russian soldiers had gone on the hunt for women to rape. She was one of their victims. “I like sculpting because it helps keep me calm,” she said. “It’s good to do things with my hands.” Before the war, if someone had told the 42-year-mother of two that she would one day be in therapy, she would have laughed. It is the kind of treatment people “with lots of money” do, she said, but thanks to the state of Ukraine they are paying for her to process the traumas that she endured when the Russian Army invaded her rural village near the city of Borodyanka, about 60 km outside Kyiv. Not only was she raped by 19-year-old Dania, a soldier the same age as one of her sons, but one of her neighbours - the husband of the Russians’ second rape victim - was shot in front of her at point blank … [Read more...] about ‘I was raped in Ukraine by a Russian soldier – he was the same age as my son’
