As the father in Andrei Zvyagintsev's film Loveless drives to work, ignorant of the fact that his son has just gone missing, he listens to accusations on the radio that the media are “whipping up public hysteria” about the end of the world. The director's careful choice of radio programme hints at the tense siege mentality that predominates in Russia , where state television breathlessly details nefarious American plots and restrictive laws are passed so fast that parliament is often nicknamed the “crazy printer”. It is not quite as politically charged as his 2014 masterpiece Leviathan , but the latest movie's astringent depiction of Russia in the late Putin years has sparked similar criticisms of Russophobia at home following its June debut. It opens in the UK on Friday and in the United States on 16 February. The anger is tempered by a grudging respect since Loveless, like Leviathan before it, has been nominated for an Oscar for best foreign picture, as well as a … [Read more...] about Russia’s most divisive director releases Oscar-nominated film in UK

Florence Pugh insists Don’t Worry Darling is more than just the Harry Styles sex scenes
Florence Pugh has slammed the laser-focused interest in her upcoming film Don’t Worry Darling and a certain sex scene with co-star Harry Styles . When the first trailer for the film was released in May, it showed a scintillating moment in which the pair engage in oral sex on a dining room table – and it was all fans on social media could talk about. During a recent interview, Oxford actress Florence refused to speak about the scene and criticized viewers for reducing the film to just one sex scene. ‘When it’s reduced to your sex scenes, or to watch the most famous man in the world go down on someone, it’s not why we do it. It’s not why I’m in this industry,’ she told Harper’s Bazaar . ‘Obviously, the nature of hiring the most famous pop star in the world, you’re going to have conversations like that. ‘That’s just not what I’m going to be discussing because [this movie is] bigger and better than that. And the people who made it are bigger and better than that.’ … [Read more...] about Florence Pugh insists Don’t Worry Darling is more than just the Harry Styles sex scenes

House of Questions: All Eyes on HBO’s
Photo-Illustration: Vulture; Photo by HBO Max Game of Thrones ended its epic eight-season run three years ago as the most-watched show in HBO history, an unlikely outcome given how it started back in April 2011 . While network suits always had confidence in the show’s long-term prospects — hence the massive investment in production and marketing —they were also fairly certain it would not be setting any records out of the gate. In fact, they weren’t even thinking it would be their biggest hit of the season. “No one is expecting it to hit Boardwalk Empire numbers,” an exec at the network emailed me at the time. Perhaps it was a case of preemptive spin, but those internal predictions turned out to be right: The very first GOT opened with 4.3 million linear viewers, about a half-million fewer than watched the series premiere of Terrence Winter’s mob drama seven months earlier. More than a decade later, HBO is once again getting ready to launch an adaption of a book from … [Read more...] about House of Questions: All Eyes on HBO’s
Black Panther’s Letitia Wright to star in thriller about real-life Silent Twins June and Jennifer Gibbons
Black Panther star Letitia Wright has reportedly been signed up to star in The Silent Twins, a thriller based on the true story of June and Jennifer Gibbons. The movie, which will be helmed by Polish director Agnieszka Smoczynska will follow the real life story of a pair of identical twins, originally from Barbados but who grew up in Wales. They became known as The Silent Twins as they refused to communicate with anyone but each other, and ended up in Broadmoor Hospital after they turned to crime. Jennifer and June spent 11 years in Broadmoor where they were studied by doctors and psychologists, but the pair would still only communicate with each other and became catatonic when separated. They had a long-standing agreement that if one of them died, the other should begin to speak and to live a normal life – but the circumstances surrounding Jennifer’s death were equally as mysterious. When they were transferred from Broadmoor to another clinic in 1993, they made the … [Read more...] about Black Panther’s Letitia Wright to star in thriller about real-life Silent Twins June and Jennifer Gibbons
Netflix’s ad-supported plan won’t allow you to download shows to watch offline
Netflix is reportedly making changes to its cheaper ad-supported subscription plan by not allowing users to download movies and TV shows to watch offline. People might have been willing to endure ads in the middle of their Netflix binges if it meant they had to pay less but it looks like they might be losing out on an important feature. The streaming giant’s upcoming ad-supported plans might disable downloading shows and movies for offline viewing as reported by Bloomberg . This would be a major inconvenience for people who like to download their favourite shows and movies to their devices to watch on a flight or on the tube to work. The removal of this feature was spotted in codes within Netflix’s iOS app by developer Steve Moser. The internal codes indicate messages like ‘Downloads available on all plans except Netflix with ads’ that gave away the plans to remove the popular feature. The report also suggests that anyone opting for the basic plan will unable … [Read more...] about Netflix’s ad-supported plan won’t allow you to download shows to watch offline
Games Inbox: The fate of Kratos in God Of War Ragnarök, Splatoon 3 concerns, and Wave Race 64 love
The Wednesday letters page considers the madness of video game release schedules, as one reader talks up the Sonic the Hedgehog movies. To join in with the discussions yourself email [email protected] End of the story They’ve already said that this will be the last Norse game, so there’s two obvious eventualities at the end: either Kratos is alive and ready to go take on a new pantheon of gods or he dies and his story comes to an end, with his son or someone else taking over as the lead of the series. Personally, I think Kratos is doomed. I hated him in the PlayStation 2 games but his rejuvenation in the reboot is some of the best writing I’ve ever seen in a video game, especially as his changing attitude took place in front of you, as you played, and yet it seemed very subtle and organic. Without even getting into spoiler speculation, I just don’t see him going on to live happily after ever or becoming some kind of avenging superhero. Nope, I think … [Read more...] about Games Inbox: The fate of Kratos in God Of War Ragnarök, Splatoon 3 concerns, and Wave Race 64 love
Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 review – end of story
The biggest game of the year blasts its way onto shop shelves, but is it coasting on past successes or could this be the best Call Of Duty yet? This is the year that Call Of Duty’s rivals hoped its crown would slip. After some well-publicised sackings , and then walkouts, from developer Infinity Ward it seemed as if cracks were finally starting to show. But if there were any they’ve been plastered over with consummate skill and this is, for better and for worst, exactly what you’d expect from a sequel to Modern Warfare 2. We do feel some sympathy for Infinity Ward, and co-developers Sledgehammer Games and Raven Software. Not only has the series’ success made Call Of Duty a target of hate amongst more elitist gamers, but if Modern Warfare 3 is anything less than the fastest-selling video game of all time (a position held by both Black Ops and Modern Warfare 2) then it will be immediately proclaimed as the beginning of the end for the franchise, Activision and first person … [Read more...] about Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 review – end of story
MultiVersus to add Beetlejuice and the Wicked Witch of the West
Gremlins and Black Adam have been confirmed for MultiVersus but new leaks reveal the witch from The Wizard of Oz is also on her way. Just like fellow free-to-play game Fortnite , there’s now a constant stream of rumours for crossover fighter Multiversus – and almost all of them have so far proven to be accurate. Just the other day Black Adam and Stripe , the lead monster from Gremlins, was rumoured and now they’ve both been officially confirmed. We’re already onto the next rumour though, which claims that Beetlejuice and the Wicked Witch of the West from The Wizard of Oz are also coming to the game. The rumours are so accurate because they’re datamined from the game itself, which features a number of quotes from the Beetlejuice movie and voiced by Christopher Swindle, who played the character in the Lego Dimensions video game (more on that later). Some of these lines reference the Wicked Witch of the West from The Wizard of Oz, with announcer lines also referring … [Read more...] about MultiVersus to add Beetlejuice and the Wicked Witch of the West
MultiVersus leaks Black Adam and Gremlins for Season 1
Ahead of Season 1’s launch, DC’s Black Adam and Gremlins villain Stripe have been leaked as future playable characters. It looks like MultiVersus can’t announce anything without it being leaked online first. Ahead of today’s update, that will kick off Season 1 , two more characters have been confirmed ahead of an official reveal. The two characters in question are DC villain/antihero Black Adam and Gizmo, the main villain of Gremlins. They can be seen in what appears to be an updated version of the game’s login screen, replacing the original duo of Batman and Shaggy. This leak seems to be the result of a new MultiVersus ad being uploaded too early. Several pictures of the artwork show it being displayed on the Xbox dashboard. Stripe’s inclusion isn’t too surprising as he was included in a previous character leak (along with mogwai Gizmo). We can’t recall if Black Adam was ever leaked, but his inclusion makes sense considering the Black Adam movie is releasing this … [Read more...] about MultiVersus leaks Black Adam and Gremlins for Season 1
