UK Covid death toll rises by 442 as daily figure drops by half in two weeks

The UK's coronavirus death toll has risen to 121,305 after a further 442 more fatalities were confirmed. This afternoon the Department of Health also said a further 9,938 people had tested positive for Covid in 24 hours. Covid-19 deaths are finally moving downward after topping 1,000 a day 23 times in January and February - but experts warn easing lockdown too fast could lead to another surge. A week ago 738 coronavirus deaths were announced, while a fortnight ago the figure was 1,001. One month ago, on January 24, 610 deaths were confirmed. In the past seven days there have been 2,815 coronavirus deaths, a 31 per cent fall compared to the week before. Stamp duty holiday to be extended to the end of June saving movers up to £15k in tax in £1bn budget giveaway

RISHI Sunak is preparing to extend the stamp duty holiday by three months until the end of June. The Chancellor is set to delay the cut off point for buyers to save thousands on purchasing homes with the move. The Treasury announced last year that it would temporarily raise the stamp duty threshold from £125,000 to £500,000 for property sales in England and Northern Ireland. But many people have been left scrambling to complete their transactions before the deadline of March 31, worried that if they do not, they could be left with a £15,000 tax bill. The deadline will now likely roll on until the summer. The Times reported that Mr Sunak - who has been urged not to end the stamp duty holiday - will use his Budget next week to move the deadline to the end of June. COVID-19: Germany’s top-selling newspaper admits envy for UK’s vaccine rollout

Germany's top-selling newspaper has hailed the UK's COVID vaccine rollout success and its plans to lift lockdown, announcing on its front page: "Dear British, we envy you." The article in the tabloid paper Bild says Brits "are reacting with overwhelming euphoria" after Boris Johnson revealed plans to gradually lift all restrictions by 21 June . UK holiday prices jump 100% & families face paying thousands more – but there are still decent deals to be had

UK holidays are jumping in price due to demand, with some costing as much as £600 more following the lockdown announcement. Yesterday, Boris Johnson confirmed that self-catered holidays could go ahead from April 12 , following by hotels from May 17. While there are still restrictions in place - one household only in April, rising to two households on holiday from May - it has already resulted in a huge rush to book in a holiday. Sykes Holiday Cottage bookings were up 150 per cent year-on-year with a booking taken every eight seconds after the PM's announcement, while Away resorts saw bookings up 243 per cent compared to last year. According to research team Mitel , domestic holidays are expected to hit a 10-year high, with Brits to spend more than £7bn - up £5.8bn in 2019. Sahayb Abu trial: Alleged terror plotter tells court he was studying Alan Titchmarsh gardening videos

An aspiring rapper accused of plotting a terrorist attack using a gladiator-style sword founded an agricultural charity and was studying Alan Titchmarsh gardening videos, he has told a jury. Sahayb Abu has admitted buying the 18in sword, a knife, a combat vest, balaclavas and gloves before his arrest on 9 July last year - but denied he was preparing for a terror strike during the pandemic. The 27-year-old, from Dagenham in east London, told the court the items were "props" for a rap video. Sahayb said he had founded a charity called Islamic Growth to provide irrigation for crops in Somalia and wanted to be a vegetable farmer. But he first needed to become famous in order to get the money and the attention for his cause and was planning to launch a parody drill rap act on TikTok.
