“It was as if I had found myself in a pool of blood that was moving with me while I walked.” Jana Kováčová admits her first impression of Inner Life, an interactive art installation custom-created for Stará Tržnica (Old Market Hall) in the centre of Bratislava, was “a bit scary”. But that impression quickly changed, she told the Slovak Spectator. As accompanying music played, she says she let herself be carried away by the atmosphere. “The part I liked most was the bit resembling the sea. It was magic, as if I had found myself in a shoal of fish,” she said. As as if in a shoal of fish. Crossing the Rubicon at Mar-a-Lago | Opinion
In response to the outrageous invasion of Trump's home at Mar-a-Lago, several people have suggested the deep state in general—and the FBI in particular—have "crossed the Rubicon." On Monday, Buck Sexton told Jesse Waters: It almost feels like a preemptive coup.... This is meant to prevent Donald Trump from being able to run again... This is the Rubicon being crossed. This is something we've never seen before. This is something that is outrageous. And the usage of the FBI in this way is really the nail in the coffin for so many Americans as to whether you can trust the FBI or trust the DOJ. Clearly not on political matters. On CNN on Tuesday, George Conway repeated that "they've crossed the Rubicon here." Crossing the Rubicon references a historic event with a specific meaning. To truly "cross the Rubicon" is to take a step which changes decisively the circumstance in which politics and government occur. Callista and I had the opportunity to visit the Rubicon in 2014. … [Read more...] about Crossing the Rubicon at Mar-a-Lago | Opinion
Archie Roach, Aboriginal singer who shamed Australia with his song Took the Children Away – obituary
Archie Roach, who has died following a long illness aged 66, overcame poverty, homelessness, prison, alcoholism and attempted suicide to become a revered singer, songwriter and storyteller, shining a shocking spotlight on the injustices suffered by Australia’s indigenous people. Written directly from his own painful experience as one of the “stolen generation”, his heartbreaking song Took the Children Away, originally recorded in 1990, gained celebrated status, won various awards – including the international Human Rights Achievement Award – and forced Australia to confront the ugly truth of the government policy, which ran from the 1880s to the 1970s, of forcibly removing Aboriginal babies from their families and cutting them off from their traditions so they would be educated and assimilated into white culture. He was born on January 8 1956 in Mooroopna, Victoria, to the Bunjalung Aborigines Nellie Austin and Archie Roach Snr, but, like many others, was taken by government … [Read more...] about Archie Roach, Aboriginal singer who shamed Australia with his song Took the Children Away – obituary
Ann Shulgin, pioneering researcher who with her husband Alexander explored the uses of psychedelic drugs – obituary
Ann Shulgin, who has died aged 91, probably tried every available psychedelic drug; with her chemist husband Alexander (Sasha) Shulgin , who has been described as “the grandfather of ecstasy”, she was a pioneer in advocating the use of MDMA or ecstasy in a therapeutic context. “He was the scientist and I was the psychologist” was how she summarised their collaboration, both acting as guinea pigs. At the height of the 1990s explosion in “rave” culture, Ann Shulgin argued that MDMA and similar chemicals might counteract a lack of empathy and cohesion among those in their twenties and thirties. “Many young people who go to raves are from big cities and they grow up learning to be cautious, not to look strangers in the eye,” she said. “When young people go to a rave, it’s their first experience of being able to relax and expand boundaries, with ecstasy as a heart-opener.” MDMA or 3,4-methylenedioxy-N-methamphetamine, a stimulant with mild hallucinogenic properties which the Shulgins … [Read more...] about Ann Shulgin, pioneering researcher who with her husband Alexander explored the uses of psychedelic drugs – obituary

Bendy tech promise for graphene
By Yasmin Ali Published 29 July 2015 Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Graphene, a sheet of single carbon atoms, has been manipulated into tiny complex structures like springs using the paper art technique of kirigami. Origami and kirigami, a sister technique where cutting is allowed, have increasingly influenced engineering and scientific research. Some mechanical properties of graphene mimicked those of a sheet of paper. The findings could pave the way to better flexible and stretchable electronics. The research was carried out at Cornell University, New York, and published in Nature . The team used micro-manipulators, or small remote controlled needles, to create the graphene structures. "We also attached magnets to the structures and waved another magnet nearby, causing it to bend," Prof Paul McEuen, lead author, told BBC Science in Action . … [Read more...] about Bendy tech promise for graphene
