As a 41-year-old working side by side with a 22-year-old it is easy to forget she never felt the thrill of renting a VHS on a Friday night – or the frustration of discovering the person beforehand never bothered rewinding the movie. So I sat down with Lyric Waiwiri-Smith to field her questions and school her on the best and worst of life before 2000. Lyric Waiwiri-Smith: How did you cope without GPS? Did everyone just carry maps? Amberleigh Jack: Pretty much. We had maps in the glove box and if you were on a road trip you had your passenger navigate. Also, if we got lost, we’d go into a petrol station and borrow their map. Or we would ask the attendant where to go and write their directions down. READ MORE: How well do you speak emoji? Why no mum should go on her daughter’s hen do: By LINDSAY NICHOLSON, who lived to regret it
The vodka shots were lined up in front of the bride-to-be. The assembled hens were consulting their phones for a drinking game called 'Mr & Mrs' where the bride is quizzed on how well she knows the groom, sinking a shot for every answer she gets wrong. The questions began innocuously enough — what's your future husband's collar size? — but became considerably more X-rated as the game wore on. Where's the harm in that, I hear you ask? Lindsay says: 'For myself though, I might decline future offers and revert to what the older generation has traditionally done while the young party: the more conventional role of, er, babysitting!' The only problem is, it was my daughter getting married. And I was a willing prisoner, smiling gamely as I learned more than any mother really wants — or needs — to know about her offspring's sex life. So it was with a shudder that I saw pictures last week of Newsnight presenter Kirsty Wark sipping a cocktail at her own daughter's hen do. … [Read more...] about Why no mum should go on her daughter’s hen do: By LINDSAY NICHOLSON, who lived to regret it

Drawing on life’s little ironies
Before settling into the serious business of self-revelation, Jean-Jacques Sempé places a roll-up between his lips and plops on to the piano bench. As he bangs away at the keys, swaying and puffing in rhythm, he bears a startling resemblance to one of the cartoon figures that have, over the last four decades, made him a legend. His depictions of housewives spit-polishing train tracks, businessmen quibbling over metaphysics at the water-cooler and astronauts discussing extramarital affairs en route to the moon have been published in more than 30 countries. Born in Bordeaux in 1932, Sempé has spent most of his life in the St Germain-des-Près district of Paris, where he lives a stone's throw from the actress Catherine Deneuve. As a young man, he worked endless odd jobs, even delivering wine by bicycle through the rolling hills of the Gironde. "I had a go at all sorts of things before taking up drawing, but none of my jobs lasted very long," he says. "I tried to work for a bank, the … [Read more...] about Drawing on life’s little ironies
Kirk Cameron Talks ‘Lifemark’ Movie That Proves Why Life Should Be ‘Defended At All Costs’ | The Daily Wire
Kirk Cameron opened up about how his new film “Lifemark” came to be, saying it’s a story about “life” and the message that adoption can be a “compassionate, beautiful, solution to a very difficult problem in our culture today.” The 51-year-old actor spoke to The Daily Wire Thursday about his new film that touches on pro-life and pro-choice issues, and said it provides proof that “the power of one choice impacts more than just one life.” A description of the movie reads: “David’s comfortable world is turned upside down when his birth mother unexpectedly reaches out to him, longing to meet the 18-year-old son she’s only held once. With the encouragement of his adoptive parents, David embarks on a journey of discovery that leads to a staggering truth from his past.” It stars Cameron, Rebecca Rogers Nelson, Raphael Ruggero, Dawn Long, Justin Sterner, Marisa Hampton and Alex Kendrick. Both Cameron and Kendrick act in the movie and are executive producers on the film. Forget Grease, if you want to remember Olivia Newton-John at her best, watch Xanadu
LIFE Forget watching Grease, Xanadu was the perfect Olivia Newton John movie. OPINION: This week, you’re going to see a lot of pictures of Olivia Newton-John as Sandy from Grease as you scroll through your socials. Newton-John, 73, died on Tuesday after a decades long battle with breast cancer , and that role is probably her most famous – and if you loved that film, fair play, there are some bangers on that soundtrack. But if you really want to remember Newton-John at her most glorious, her most radiant, then forget that 50s pastiche with its grubby innuendo and awkward sexual politics – watch Xanadu instead. Now, there’s a chance you might never even have heard of this film. It’s been all but forgotten since it came out in 1980 – mostly because in no world could it be considered a good film. But don’t let that put you off. READ MORE: Ponies, Barbie and Grease: All the things I prayed for in the 80s Surprise!
