Christian Cooper, the Black man who was catapulted into the national spotlight after he was the target of racially charged accusations by a White woman in Central Park, now has a new TV show. National Geographic announced this week that Cooper will be hosting "Extraordinary Birder," a look into the "wild, wonderful and unpredictable world of birds." No premiere date was listed. "Whether braving stormy seas in Alaska for puffins, trekking into rainforests in Puerto Rico for parrots, or scaling a bridge in Manhattan for a peregrine falcon, he does whatever it takes to learn about these extraordinary feathered creatures and show us the remarkable world in the sky above," the channel said in a statement . In 2020, the Harvard-educated science editor was bird watching in a wooded area of New York's Central Park called the Ramble, when he encountered a woman, whose dog was running loose. The interaction, which was recorded on camera , went viral. "I said, 'Excuse me, ma'am, … [Read more...] about A White woman called police on him while he was bird-watching in Central Park. Boy accused of stabbing Ava White to death ‘just wanted to frighten her’
The boy on trial for stabbing a 12-year-old girl to death at a Christmas market said he pulled a knife on her because he was scared she was going to jump him. The 14-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, told Liverpool Crown Court ‘I promise, I didn’t mean to hit her’ as he gave evidence over videolink on Thursday. The jury has been told he claims he stabbed Ava in self-defence after an altercation in Liverpool city centre on the evening of November 25 last year. The incident allegedly happened after the schoolgirl demanded he delete a Snapchat video he had taken of her and her friends ‘messing around’. The court was previously played a 20-send clip showing Ava running towards the boy, before getting stabbed in the neck. Prosecutor Charlotte Newell QC told the court Ava did not ‘inflict any violence upon him greater than a push, nor did she produce or have any weapon.’ But the boy’s reaction was ‘to thrust a knife into the neck of this unarmed child … [Read more...] about Boy accused of stabbing Ava White to death ‘just wanted to frighten her’

Can bees count? That’s a more complicated question than you’d expect
Two bee or not two bee? That is the question a group of Australian scientists set out to answer : whether bees can distinguish between odd and even numbers. And, perhaps surprisingly, they found the answer to be yes, they can. This is the first example of a skill known as “parity classification” – determining whether a number of objects is odd or even – to have been exhibited in a non-human animal. Researchers wanted to see whether the relatively simple brains of bees (containing just 960,000 neurons in comparison the human brain’s 86 billion) would be able to categorise numbers by their parity. The study was led by Dr Scarlett Howard at Monash University in Australia. To do this they split their bees into two groups. Pieces of white card printed with between one and 10 black shapes were placed next to bee feeders and the bees were allowed to fly around discovering the food associated with each card. One group of bees were taught to associate even numbers a sugary … [Read more...] about Can bees count? That’s a more complicated question than you’d expect
Officials expected to decide on new COVID-19 vaccine design in early July
Federal regulators are expected to decide on a new COVID-19 vaccine design in early July, which would allow vaccine companies to begin production for rollout this fall and winter, a top official told ABC News. Food and Drug Administration vaccine chief Dr. Peter Marks said the decision would likely come from the FDA shortly after its advisory committee meets on June 28 to review data from the vaccine companies about the versions of next-generation vaccines they're testing. The FDA will then make a decision on which type of vaccine the companies should go ahead with, an estimation they'll base on what could offer the best protection even in the face of new variants this fall and winter, similar to how the flu vaccine is concocted ahead of flu season. "We'll have to make some decision by early July to make sure that the manufacturers know what we're looking to do, so that they know what they have to start producing in large quantities," Marks, who serves as director of the … [Read more...] about Officials expected to decide on new COVID-19 vaccine design in early July
U.S. preparing plan to destroy Russia’s Black Sea Fleet—Ukraine
A Ukrainian official has said that the U.S. is working on a plan to target Russia's Black Sea Fleet to free up ports whose blockade by Moscow threatens world food supplies. With Ukraine one of the world's biggest suppliers of grain, there are fears the blocking by Russia of the ports that allow the distribution of the food will spur a global food shortage. On Friday, Ukrainian ministry of internal affairs adviser Anton Gerashchenko tweeted that the U.S. "is preparing a plan to destroy the Black Sea Fleet." "The effective work of the Ukrainians on warships convinced (the USA) to prepare a plan to unblock the ports," he said. "Deliveries of powerful anti-ship weapons (Harpoon and Naval Strike Missile with a range of 250-300 km) are being discussed." His message follows a report from Reuters that the White House is working on a plan to put anti-ship missiles in the hands of Ukrainian troops to defeat the naval blockade. U.S. officials and congressional sources said the powerful … [Read more...] about U.S. preparing plan to destroy Russia’s Black Sea Fleet—Ukraine
