John Bercow pulled no punches on Question Time with withering criticism of the Tories that left minister Robert Jenrick speechless. The former speaker was savage as he laid into the 'juvenile' government's response in Jersey and its 'ineptitude' in handling the Covid pandemic. He repeatedly "schooled" housing minister Mr Jenrick during fierce exchanges on the BBC's flagship Question Time programme. In one feisty slap down during a discussion on Brexit Mr Jenrick said: "John obviously sat in the chair using every device and opportunity to make it [Brexit] difficult." Mr Bercow snapped back: "It's called standing up for the rights of the democratic legislature, Robert. I'll introduce you to the concept. "A tutorial would be of great advantage to members of her majesty's government." After a stunned silence host Fiona Bruce appeared to come to the rescue and said: "Some people are applauding it, some people are shaking their heads", referring to the programme's virtual … [Read more...] about Question Time: John Bercow’s withering slapdowns leave Tory Robert Jenrick speechless

Defence experts warn a huge defence overhaul could weaken the UK on the world stage. A defence spending review expected within two weeks is predicted to put greater emphasis on space and cyber conflicts. Critics fear “boots on the ground” numbers will be slashed by 10,000, with several Army battalions axed. Tanks and other under-used weapons are also expected to be retired despite warnings that Britain’s ageing vehicles would be outmatched in any conflict with Russia. MPs of the Commons Defence Committee say UK tank units face “mass obsolescence” after two decades of being run down. And a report by the School of Security Studies at King’s College London says previous revamps massively under-estimated the costs of new technologies. The study by Dr David Jordan also notes that a 1966 review scrapped a planned aircraft carrier, which would have been a boon in 1982’s Falklands War. Dr Jordan adds 1982 Defence Secretary John Nott had had to make “deep cuts” to the Royal … [Read more...] about Defence overhaul could weaken UK with real-world assets lost amid high-tech review
"My child is not a lab rat." The words are from a 25-year-old woman, Susan, and they're in reference to her three-year-old twin girls. While she speaks to DW, her eyes flicker between them as they begin to meander away — first together, then in different directions — in a large, open park in Bonn, Germany. "It just hasn't been tested enough," Susan insists. "A few months [of testing]? That isn't safe." So no, she says. Her kids are not getting vaccinated against COVID-19. And she isn't, either. Her husband had to, and she didn't like that. At a nearby playground, another mother, who does not want to share her name, feels very differently. "I'd vaccinate them. If it were allowed, or doable, then definitely." Her 12-year-old daughter, she says, has had two different kids in her classroom get COVID-19. That led to a two-week quarantine — each time. "That's where you realize it affects them too." At some point in the coming weeks, the European Medicines Agency is expected to … [Read more...] about COVID: How many parents will actually vaccinate their kids?
The 5p charge for single-use plastic bags is going to double to 10p from 21 May, the government has confirmed. All stores in England will also have to apply the charge - a departure from the previous policy where only retailers with 250 employees or more needed to do so. The number of single-use plastic bags distributed by large supermarkets has plummeted by 95% since the 5p charge was introduced in England in 2015. The average shopper now buys just four plastic carrier bags a year, compared with about 140 in 2014. Last December, a survey conducted for the waste and resources organisation Wrap suggested that 73% of consumers backed the levy. Advertisement However, the same research found 26% of people still buy single-use bags at the till. It is hoped that by extending the charge to all shops, plastic bag usage will plunge by up to 80% in small and medium-sized businesses, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs said.
