Amber Heard calls for new libel trial against Johnny Depp after losing multimillion-dollar defamation lawsuit

July 5, 2022 by news.sky.com

Amber Heard has asked a Virginia judge to throw out her losing verdict against Johnny Depp and order a new court case, claiming the judgment wasn't supported by evidence during the trial. Lawyers for the 36-year-old Aquaman star set out a 43-page motion, claiming Depp "proceeded solely on a defamation by implication theory, abandoning any claims that Ms Heard's statements were actually false". Calling the verdict "excessive", the document went on: "Ms Heard respectfully requests this court to set aside the jury verdict in favour of Mr Depp and against Ms Heard in its entirety, dismiss the complaint, or in the alternative, order a new trial." The court case came to an end on 1 June, with the jury finding that a 2018 article Heard wrote for The Washington Post , about her alleged experiences as a survivor of domestic abuse, was defamatory towards 59-year-old Depp. The jury of five men and two women reached the verdict unanimously, saying Depp had proven all the … [Read more...] about Amber Heard calls for new libel trial against Johnny Depp after losing multimillion-dollar defamation lawsuit

Love Island’s Jack Keating’s mother addresses cruel comments from trolls on social media since Casa Amor debut

July 5, 2022 by metro.co.uk

Jack Keating’s mother Yvonne Connolly has addressed the cruel comments her son has received from trolls since his debut on Love Island ’s Casa Amor . The 23-year-old social media manager, who Yvonne shares with ex-husband Ronan Keating, joined the show last week as one of the bombshells for the girls in Casa Amor. However, as well as a vast majority of fans swooning over him, Jack also faced some cruel comments about his red hair and pale skin. Whole Yvonne did not call out the specific comments, she did address that the reaction to his appearance on the show was far more positive on Instagram than it had been on Twitter. She shared a photo of Jack on her Instagram story, adding: ‘After the teaser I’m looking forward to watching Jack tonight on Love Island. ‘Thank you so much for all your comments. All positive (can’t say the same for other platforms). ‘So many people wishing Jack well and rooting for him. It means so much. My heart.’ Yvonne and Ronan … [Read more...] about Love Island’s Jack Keating’s mother addresses cruel comments from trolls on social media since Casa Amor debut

Online slots and casinos ‘likely to be targeted in gambling White Paper’

July 5, 2022 by www.independent.co.uk

Gambling minister Chris Philp has given a fresh indication that online casinos and slots will be a focus in the imminent gambling White Paper, saying they are among the games that “worry me the most”. Mr Philp singled out the two sectors “as we think about the gambling White Paper” as he addressed the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) Committee. Asked what assessment had been made of gambling harms posed by lotteries, including instant win games, Mr Philp cited the 2018 health survey for England , which suggested problem gambling rates were about 0.9% for draw-based games such as the National Lottery , and 1.4% for scratchcards, “which are considerably lower than for various other activities surveyed, where the range went from 2.7% to 12.7%”. He added: “The things that worry me the most as we think about the gambling White Paper are things like online slots and online casinos – the areas where people can get really heavily addicted to gambling. … [Read more...] about Online slots and casinos ‘likely to be targeted in gambling White Paper’

Cost-of-living crisis being treated as seriously as pandemic, No 10 says

July 5, 2022 by www.independent.co.uk

Boris Johnson has ordered ministers to hold regular press conferences on efforts to counter the rising cost of living. Regular ministerial press conferences were a feature of the pandemic and the decision to restart them is a sign that No 10 is concerned about the public mood in the face of the squeeze on living standards. Downing Street said the decision to hold televised briefings in the same way as during the Covid-19 crisis showed rising prices were being “treated with the same level of seriousness in terms of trying to address the problem”. Mr Johnson used Tuesday’s Cabinet meeting to tell ministers “tackling inflation and addressing cost-of-living pressures will remain the top priority, which is why we will be holding regular Government press conferences over the next six months to explain the details of different elements of the Government’s plan for the economy”, Downing Street said. Asked whether it was a sign that the crisis was as serious as the … [Read more...] about Cost-of-living crisis being treated as seriously as pandemic, No 10 says

Kuwait’s crown prince dissolves parliament, calls elections

June 22, 2022 by www.independent.co.uk

Kuwait 's crown prince on Wednesday dissolved Parliament and called for early elections, a move to ease government gridlock that has bred popular opposition and paralyzed the tiny country for months. In his televised national address, the 81-year-old Sheikh Meshal Al Ahmed Al Jaber said that while the ruling family respected Kuwait's constitution that grants the country's rowdy parliament more power than elsewhere in the autocratic region of Persian Gulf sheikhdoms, popular dissatisfaction over the deepening dysfunction compelled the emir to intervene. “Our goal with this constitutional solution is the firm and sincere desire for the people themselves to have the final say in the process of correcting the political course anew by choosing who represents the right choice," said Sheikh Meshal, who assumed most of the emir's responsibilities last year. A date for legislative elections was not immediately announced. The country's Cabinet resigned over two months ago … [Read more...] about Kuwait’s crown prince dissolves parliament, calls elections

Japan alarmed by China, Russia team-up as NATO turns eye to Asia

July 5, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

Japanese officials lodged fresh protests with Beijing and rang up Moscow this week after Chinese and Russian government vessels were seen operating off the disputed Senkaku Islands, according to a report out of Tokyo. Japan administers the uninhabited island chain in the East China Sea , but the islets are also claimed by China as Diaoyu. Tokyo has been tracking an alarming increase in Chinese coast guard and maritime militia activity around the islands in recent years. A pair of China Coast Guard vessels chased a Japanese fishing boat through the 12-nautical-mile territorial waters of the Senkaku Islands on Tuesday in what was the 15th such incident this year, Japan's Kyodo News reported. Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi of Japan told reporters that Tokyo lodged a "serious protest" over the move. Intrusions into the territorial waters around the islets remain relatively infrequent; almost all are done by white hull coast guard vessels. In the 12- to 24-nautical-mile … [Read more...] about Japan alarmed by China, Russia team-up as NATO turns eye to Asia

Twitter suspends Dave Rubin for sharing Jordan Peterson’s Elliot Page tweet

July 5, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

Days after Jordan Peterson was suspended from Twitter for his offensive comments about Elliot Page, The Rubin Report host Dave Rubin has now suffered a similar fate for sharing a screenshot of the same tweet. Conservative commentator Ben Shapiro broke the news to his followers on Tuesday that Rubin had been suspended by what he calls the "woke activists" who run Twitter. Shapiro also shared Peterson's original tweet, putting himself at risk of being suspended from the platform, as well. Last week, Canadian psychologist and conservative commentator Peterson shared a tweet that deadnamed transgender actor Elliot Page and called the doctor who performed a mastectomy on them a "criminal physician" while recalling a time when pride was "a sin." "I have been suspended by Twitter for posting a screenshot of Jordan Peterson's tweet which got he himself suspended," Rubin wrote in a message sent to and published by Shapiro. Rubin and Peterson's daughter, Mikhaila Peterson, had both … [Read more...] about Twitter suspends Dave Rubin for sharing Jordan Peterson’s Elliot Page tweet

U.S. and China in fresh spat over Russian disinformation in Ukraine

July 5, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

Nicholas Burns , the top American envoy in Beijing, rebuked China 's Foreign Ministry officials on Monday for "telling lies" by repeating the Kremlin's talking points on events in Ukraine. The rare public criticism by Burns came amid an intense clash with his Russian opposite number, Andrey Denisov, at the World Peace Forum. The contretemps came at an event co-hosted by Beijing's Tsinghua University and the Chinese Foreign Ministry-backed Chinese People's Institute of Foreign Affairs think tank. "I would hope that Chinese Foreign Ministry spokespersons would stop accusing NATO of starting this war. That's Russian propaganda," Burns said in response to a question. "I hope Foreign Ministry spokespersons would also stop telling lies about American bioweapons labs, which do not exist in Ukraine," the diplomat said. "These all came from Russia. Unfortunately, this has been picked up by the Chinese." Beijing, ostensibly neutral on Russia's war in Ukraine, has refrained from … [Read more...] about U.S. and China in fresh spat over Russian disinformation in Ukraine
