ACTOR and comedian John Witherspoon, who starred with rapper Ice Cube in the hit 'Friday' comedy movie franchise, has been confirmed dead aged 77. John Witherspoon also starred as John "Pops" Williams on the sitcom The Wayans Bros and appeared alongside Will Smith in the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. A family statement released on his Twitter account said: "It is with deep sadness we have to tweet this, but our husband & father John Witherspoon has passed away. "He was a Legend in the entertainment industry, and a father figure to all who watched him over the years. We love you 'POPS' always & forever." Witherspoon, who was born in Detroit, Michigan, started his career as a stand-up comedian and began acting in the 1970s. Respected Westminster journalist Chris Moncrieff has died aged 88. The former political editor of the PA news agency, who had four children with his late wife Margaret, died in hospital this morning after a short illness, his family said. Mr Moncrieff was hailed as 'the one journalist who mattered' by former Prime Minister Tony Blair, declared a 'national treasure' by Sir John Major, and appointed a CBE by Margaret Thatcher in the 1989 New Year Honours. He retired after 32 years at Westminster in 1994, but returned to work the next day and continued to contribute to the agency until his death. Retired bank manager John Lawler loved to walk. He particularly loved to walk with his wife Joan. It made their children and grandchildren smile that they would still walk hand in hand, even after almost 60 years together. Every day the pair, both in their 80s, would stride out around the racecourse near their home in York, or into town. Twice every day (there and back), they would walk past a chiropractor’s practice. When, back in 2017, John, then 79, started to be irritated by a pain in his leg — not a chronic pain but one keeping him awake at night — his GP suggested he might benefit from a course of physio. Colin Skipp, who played Tony Archer for more than 40 years on The Archers, has died at the age of 80. The Radio 4 programme said Skipp, who featured in many of Ambridge's most memorable storylines, 'will be greatly missed'. Skipp played Tony Archer from 1967 to 2013 before bowing out of the BBC soap because of ill health.
