Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, the captured leader of Mexico’s Sinaloa drug cartel, has hired a New York lawyer best known for successfully defending the son of the convicted mafia boss John Gotti to represent him in his US criminal case. The lawyer, Jeffrey Lichtman, said Guzman had hired him along with three others – Marc Fernich, who has also represented Gotti’s son, John Gotti, Jr; William Purpura, who represented a Baltimore drug kingpin, Richard Wilford; and Eduardo Balarezo, who represented Alfredo Beltrán Leyva, the head of another Mexican drug cartel. Wilford and Beltrán Leyva were both convicted and received long prison sentences. Guzman, 60, is charged with running a transnational cocaine, heroin and methamphetamine smuggling operation, playing a key role in Mexico’s decade-long drug war that has killed more than 100,000 people. He was captured in Mexico in January 2016, six months after escaping from a high-security prison in … [Read more...] about Mexican drug lord ‘El Chapo’ hires Gotti lawyer in US case

A US judge on Thursday ruled that Mexico's infamous drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman must remain in solitary confinement at a high-security New York City to keep him from attempting to control his nacrotics-trafficking empire. In a written statement, US District Judge Brian Cogan in Brooklyn said that confinement is necessary "to ensure that the defendant cannot coordinate an escape from prison, direct any violence against cooperators or manage any aspect of the Sinaloa cartel's enterprise." Guzman, who was extradited to the US in January, stands accused of leading Mexico's notorious Sinaloa cartel known for major cross-border drug-trafficking operations and violent attacks against rivals and security forces. He has denied allegations that he led a multibillion-dollar international drug trafficking operation that involved brutal assassinations and kidnappings. Since arriving to the US, Guzman has been locked up for 23 hours per days in a 6-by-3.7-meter (20-by-12-foot) cell in … [Read more...] about Still a danger, US judge rules El Chapo must remain in solitary confinement | News | DW.COM | 04.05.2017
He liked to be called the "Dapper Don" because of his fondness for exquisite Italian suits. Or "Teflon Don" when the Feds again failed to make racketeering charges stick. But at the end, Mafia boss John Gotti was a sick, old man dying of cancer on the hospital ward of a grim prison in middle America. Gotti's death yesterday has sealed the end of an era. He was the last Godfather, the capo di tutti capi of the once-feared Five Families that held a vice-like grip on organised crime in New York City. And while he lost his battle against cancer, the age of the Godfather was long past. Even the old goodfellas HQ, the Ravenite social club on Little Italy's Mulberry Street, is now a boutique. Gotti, 61, was old-style Mafioso. He took over the helm of the Gambino crime family in 1985, securing promotion with a burst of gunfire that sent the old boss Paul Castellano into early retirement. It was a classic hit, the sort where they joked afterwards: "He ordered clams but he got slugs." Dapper … [Read more...] about Last Godfather dies in jail ward

Accused: Nicholas Corozzo, right, the reputed current head of the Gambino crime family, is escorted out of the Jacob Javitz Federal Building, following his surrender The allegations were part of a sprawling federal case against the once-mighty Gambino organized crime family. So where had the balding, 5ft 5ins, 68-year-old fugitive been? "I really don't know," defense attorney Diarmuid White said outside court. Prosecutors claimed that they didn't know either. White said Corozzo … [Read more...] about Mafia capo surrenders to police after being featured on the TV show
The grandson of infamous New York mob boss the 'Teflon Don' has been sentenced to eight years in prison for selling the prescription medication oxycodone. John J. Gotti, 23, was arrested along with eight other people in August 2016, when police seized 850 pills and more than $250,000 cash, the Associated Press reported. Gotti was arrested in his Queens home, which was once the home of his grandfather the Teflon Don, also named John Gotti, who was the boss of the Gambino crime family. The Teflon Don, who was originally known as the Dapper Don thanks to his outlandish persona and stylish dress, was convicted in 1992 for five murders and was sentenced to life in prison. He died in prison in 2002 aged 61. So, while the Federal Bureau of Investigation wasn't catching Osama Bin Laden, it was piling up the paperwork on Michael Jackson. The FBI today released seven files it compiled on the late singer from 1992-2005—333 pages of evidence-gathering, rambling letters from a guy who thought he was John Gotti's son and really hard to read handwriting. Highlights include a heretofore undisclosed 1995 child-porn investigation, which went nowhere. You can read all the files here yourself, or you can peruse the best lines, quotes and other stuff we found in 'em. Let's get started: • "My interest is that half of Michael's estate is mines."—Faux Gotti Frank Paul Jones, who name-checked Jackson, President George W. Bush and, sure, why not, Earth Wind & Fire, among others, in a series of threatening letters from 1992. • "I'll commit mass murder at a Michael Jackson concert if necessary, in an to murder Michael."—Same genius, upon becoming frustrated that his letters … [Read more...] about The Michael Jackson FBI Files’ Greatest Hits

John Travolta isn't letting a stolen car slow him down. The actor and pilot has signed on as a brand ambassador for Bombardier Aircraft—a perfect fit, since he already spends half his time flying himself and his family around the world anyway! "I frankly just love being in the air, I just love the sensation of flying," he told reporters at a Bombardier event at Burbank Airport today. At this point, it might only be newsworthy when Richard Hatch isn't in prison, but as it happens, the Survivor and Celebrity Apprentice alum has finally begun serving his nine-month prison sentence in Brooklyn. Hatch turned himself in to authorities back in March on his ever-persistent federal tax-evasion charges, and while he has remained in federal custody since then, he was only recently placed in a facility—namely, the Metropolitan Detention Center in New York, which houses approximately 1,000 male and female inmates. The 50-year-old Hatch can at least console himself with knowing that he's in good famous company: Al Sharpton had a stint in the facility, as did Peter and John Gotti. As for Hatch, or inmate No. 05559-070, his projected date of release from the facility is Dec. 12 of this year. Now if only he could stay out, that would be a real Christmas miracle.
