John Walker had dreamed for years, visualising the details of the day that he would not just set a world record for the mile, but break the substantial barrier of running it in under three minutes and 50 seconds. It's no surprise that 40 years after he became the first man to do so, he still recalls it vividly. "I do think about that race, and I remember it all," he says. It was in Gothenburg, Sweden, on August 12, 1975, at the end of a long European tour and after training weeks of up to 90 miles at a time that Walker, almost on a whim, decided to aim for the record after winning 19 of his 19 races on the trip. His only regret is he didn't run faster than 3.49.4 that day. Both he and his coach, Arch Jelley, now 89, think Walker could have gone as fast as 3.46, a mark not reached until Steve Cram 11 years later, but for the poor performance of the local pacemaker. (By comparison Roger Bannister, the first man to run a four-minute mile, had three expert local runners to assist … [Read more...] about Walker, runner, world record-holder: Reunited, 40 years after John Walker made running history

Customers shopping online are prompted, either through an app or a browser extension, to claim cashback, a slice of which is given to good causes, averaging £150 per year. With a team of around 35, Kindred is … [Read more...] about ‘People say I’m a capitalist at heart – but that doesn’t mean you can’t vote Labour’

The message your out-of-office reply is really sending
It has only been 10 months since Nicky Haslam, the self-appointed annual arbiter of what is and isn’t couth in modern society, declared “out-of-office” email replies to be officially, indisputably common. And yet here we are in the first week of August, peak holiday season, under siege again from a tsunami of subject lines containing those three little Os. OOO? Aaargh. In an era when the machine of HR is supposed to have stripped workers of the ability to think for themselves, the content, tone and format of automated out-of-office replies remains mystifyingly left up to the individual. Fancy oversharing wildly? You may. Feel like making it clear you despise your job ? So be it. Wish to redirect all contacts to a fictional person? That is your right. It is the last truly lawless area of professional life. And while that sounds like a good thing, it’s absolutely not. It strikes me that there are three dominant modes of OOO: indefatigably blunt, needlessly passive-aggressive and … [Read more...] about The message your out-of-office reply is really sending
I Was In ‘What Is A Woman’: It Was The Hardest Thing I Ever Did, But I’d Do It Again | The Daily Wire
Throughout my life, I’ve held many titles: sales executive, parent, and spouse. But the one I’m now known for above all others – the one I’m most proud of – is Fighter . As someone who fell for the lies of the LGBTQ movement – that all my problems would vanish if I underwent gender transition – I’ve dedicated my life to fighting for the protection of vulnerable children falling into the gender ideology trap. Part of that fight included a recent appearance in Matt Walsh’s documentary , What Is A Woman? Though I may have seemed confident and strong on camera, taking part in the documentary was the most challenging thing I have ever had to do in my life, and I’m serious. On the day of the shoot, I even walked up the stairs at the hotel in New York, trying to avoid my children, so that I could call and cancel the interview. My daughter was on the fourth floor in the stairway, apparently realizing what I would do. Knowing that I would try to back out. Arms … [Read more...] about I Was In ‘What Is A Woman’: It Was The Hardest Thing I Ever Did, But I’d Do It Again | The Daily Wire
