History’s Greatest Obstacle to Climate Progress Has Finally Fallen
Climate change was born as a modern political issue in the United States Senate. On a hot June day in 1988, a senior NASA scientist warned a Senate committee that global warming, which was previously mooted only as a hypothesis, was not only real but was already underway. “It is time to stop waffling so much and say that the evidence is pretty strong that the greenhouse effect is here,” James Hansen said. An auspicious start, and an ironic one. Since then, the fight against climate change in the United States and abroad has been defined by one constant: You can’t get the Senate to do anything. For 34 years, the upper chamber’s peculiar failure to act on the issue has shaped nearly every facet of policy and politics. Because the Senate could not pass a comprehensive climate bill, Congress could not; because Congress could not pass a climate bill, climate-concerned presidents had to rely on executive action and the permissiveness of the Supreme Court, and climate activists had to … [Read more...] about History’s Greatest Obstacle to Climate Progress Has Finally Fallen
Musk Shreds Biden Over Push To Free Brittney Griner From Russian Prison | The Daily Wire
Elon Musk slammed President Joe Biden’s push to free WNBA player Brittney Griner from Russia for a drug offense while thousands of Americans are locked up at home for similar crimes. Griner was sentenced to 9 years in a Russian prison late last week after Russian prosecutors had argued that Griner, who was convicted of deliberately sneaking marijuana vaping materials into the country, should serve 9 1/2 years in prison. “If the president is working so hard to free someone who is in jail in Russia for some weed, shouldn’t we free people in America?” Musk said during a podcast interview last week. “There are people in jail in America for the same stuff. Shouldn’t we free them too? My opinion is that people should not be in jail for non-violent drug crimes.” The Biden administration has reportedly offered to exchange notorious Russian weapons trafficker Viktor Bout, who was convicted of terrorism charges, in exchange for the release of Griner and Paul Whelan. Out of 97 responses from local authorities, 43 said they had either stopped giving out vouchers or reduced the amount they were worth. Some councils blame government rule changes for the cutbacks. The government says funding is available to help councils support families in various ways. Families with children on free school meals across the UK have been offered food vouchers during school holidays, since a successful campaign led by footballer Marcus Rashford during the pandemic. In England, about 1.9 million children have free school meals. The funding for this summer's … [Read more...] about Free school meals: Councils in England cut back on holiday food-voucher help
Back Issues: Palmerston North’s model suburb of state housing
With housing constantly in the news these days it’s worth considering New Zealand’s responses to housing issues in the past. Foremost in government approaches to housing those in need was the First Labour Government’s introduction of their radical state housing programme following the 1935 election. In towns all over New Zealand the Government purchased blocks of land for new residential estates with the houses to be rented to those in need. Palmerston North was included. It was reported in the Manawatū Standard on November 27, 1936 that “Sixty acres of land, an educational reserve …. have been acquired for the purpose, and there will be no delay in putting the scheme into effect, stated Mr J. Hodgens, M.P…. The block will be subdivided according to the latest town-planning principles, and will not have the rectangular severity of older streets. Corners will be rounded and breathing spaces provided, possibly with a central square or reserve.” READ MORE: Couple reflect … [Read more...] about Back Issues: Palmerston North’s model suburb of state housing

Senate passes Democrats’ sweeping climate, health and tax bill, delivering win for Biden
Washington — The Senate on Sunday passed Democrats' sweeping economic package designed to combat climate change, address health care costs and raise taxes on large corporations, marking a crucial achievement for President Biden and his party as they look to maintain their hold on Congress in the November midterm elections. The plan, called the Inflation Reduction Act, cleared the upper chamber by a vote of 51 to 50 along party lines, with Vice President Kamala Harris providing the tie-breaking vote in the evenly divided Senate. Democrats used a fast-track legislative process known as reconciliation to pass the measure in the face of unanimous opposition from Republicans. "It's been a long, tough and winding road but at last, at last, we have arrived," Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said in remarks on the Senate floor as members prepared to vote for final passage. "Today, after more than a year of hard work, the Senate is making history. I am confident the Inflation … [Read more...] about Senate passes Democrats’ sweeping climate, health and tax bill, delivering win for Biden
Senate Republicans block $35 cap on price of insulin from Democratic bill
Washington — Senate Republicans on Sunday blocked a $35 monthly cap on the cost of insulin in the private market from being included in Democrats' economic tax and spending package, voting down an amendment to the measure during a marathon session leading up to what Democrats hope will be final passage of the bill. The Senate on Saturday night began consideration of more than 30 amendments to the Inflation Reduction Act, Democrats' $700 billion legislation that aims to combat climate change, raise taxes on large corporations and address rising health care costs. Amid the proposed changes to the plan was to set the $35 per month cap on insulin, the pricy medication needed to treat diabetes. Seven Republican senators voted with all 50 Democrats to keep the price ceiling in the legislation: Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, Susan Collins of Maine, Josh Hawley of Missouri, Cindy Hyde Smith of Mississippi, John Kennedy of Louisiana, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Dan Sullivan of Alaska. … [Read more...] about Senate Republicans block $35 cap on price of insulin from Democratic bill
U.S. Senate passes landmark $430bn climate change, tax and drug pricing bill to lower global warming emissions
The United States Senate has approved a sweeping package that supporters say will slash climate heating carbon emissions, lower drug prices for the elderly and demand higher taxes from corporations and the wealthy. The legislation is less ambitious than President Joe Biden's original domestic goals, but still a major victory that Democrats hope will boost their chances of keeping control of Congress in November's mid-term elections. The Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) encapsulates party ideals of tackling global heating, tempering pharmaceutical costs and taxing big corporations. After a marathon, two-day weekend session of debate, and dozens of Republican efforts to torpedo the package, the Senate approved the bill by a 51-50 party line vote. Vice President Kamala Harris cast the tie-breaking ballot. "The time is now to move forward with a big, bold package for the American people," Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said at the start of debate on Saturday night. … [Read more...] about U.S. Senate passes landmark $430bn climate change, tax and drug pricing bill to lower global warming emissions
‘Devastating Step’: Biden Admin Speaks Out Against New Indiana Pro-Life Law | The Daily Wire
The White House has spoken out against Indiana’s new bill that limits most abortions as it becomes the first state to pass such restrictions since the Supreme Court’s overturn of Roe v. Wade. “The Indiana Legislature took a devastating step as a result of the Supreme Court’s extreme decision to overturn Roe v. Wade and eliminate women’s constitutionally-protected right to abortion,” White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in a statement on Saturday. “And, it’s another radical step by Republican legislators to take away women’s reproductive rights and freedom, and put personal health care decisions in the hands of politicians rather than women and their doctors,” she added. The statement challenged Congress to “act immediately” to restore the protections of Roe. It also said President Joe Biden is “committed to taking action” regarding access to abortion care under federal law. The new Indiana law is set to take effect on September 15. The restrictions against … [Read more...] about ‘Devastating Step’: Biden Admin Speaks Out Against New Indiana Pro-Life Law | The Daily Wire
