China Is Doing Biden’s Work for Him
If President Joe Biden’s trip to Asia—marked as it was by his comments on the defense of Taiwan, announcements on a proposed new regional trade pact, and meetings with leaders who exhibit similar levels of concern about a rising China—has shown the persistence of American global power, it has also revealed something of equal importance: Beijing’s failure to translate economic might into political dominance, even in its own backyard. Biden today concluded a summit of the leaders of the Quad—a security partnership including Australia, India, Japan, and the United States—who issued a joint statement chockablock with references to promoting democracy, a rules-based global order, and peaceful resolution of disputes. That came a day after Biden announced the formation of the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework, a partnership with 13 countries as diverse as South Korea, Vietnam, and New Zealand. Notably absent from all of this was China. Biden’s trip exhibited Washington’s continued ability to … [Read more...] about China Is Doing Biden’s Work for Him

Scotland’s poorest teenagers ‘betrayed’ by Nicola Sturgeon as exam pass rates plummet
Pass rates for teenagers from Scotland’s poorest communities have plummeted following the reintroduction of formal exams, leading to claims that disadvantaged children have been “betrayed” by the SNP. Qualification results published on Tuesday showed that attainment has returned to close to pre-pandemic levels following two years of rampant grade inflation , when awards were based on teacher estimates because exams were scrapped due to Covid. However, pass rates for disadvantaged pupils fell at a far steeper rate than their wealthier peers - despite Nicola Sturgeon’s flagship pledge to “substantially eliminate” a poverty-related gulf in educational performance within the next four years. At Higher, seen as Scotland’s “gold standard” school-level qualification, the pass rate fell back to 85.1 per cent this year among the wealthiest - a drop of 5.9 percentage points from last year. But among those living in the poorest parts of the country, just 70.2 per cent of pupils earned … [Read more...] about Scotland’s poorest teenagers ‘betrayed’ by Nicola Sturgeon as exam pass rates plummet

A Deputy Senior House Parent at a top grammar school told a self-harming student she had 'more important things to deal with', an employment tribunal has heard. She was also described as 'rude and abrasive' by her boss, and was dismissed as deputy senior house parent less than a year into the role. Ms Shiells claimed she was unfairly sacked for whistleblowing on her boss, but her claim was rejected by the employment tribunal.
