Gambling minister Chris Philp has given a fresh indication that online casinos and slots will be a focus in the imminent gambling White Paper, saying they are among the games that “worry me the most”. Mr Philp singled out the two sectors “as we think about the gambling White Paper” as he addressed the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) Committee. Asked what assessment had been made of gambling harms posed by lotteries, including instant win games, Mr Philp cited the 2018 health survey for England , which suggested problem gambling rates were about 0.9% for draw-based games such as the National Lottery , and 1.4% for scratchcards, “which are considerably lower than for various other activities surveyed, where the range went from 2.7% to 12.7%”. He added: “The things that worry me the most as we think about the gambling White Paper are things like online slots and online casinos – the areas where people can get really heavily addicted to gambling. … [Read more...] about Online slots and casinos ‘likely to be targeted in gambling White Paper’

Two boys accidentally film ‘Bigfoot’ while making marshmallow s’mores tutorial video
On this day 11 years ago (July 5, 2011) Stacy Bounds and his two kids were camping at Crooked Oaks Rental Cabins in Oklahoma, US when they decided to record a tutorial on how to make marshmallow s'mores. However, their footage (above) captured something much more unnerving. As the lads sit around the fire with marshmallows on sticks, a shadowy figure can be seen moving in the forest behind them - which many reckon could be the elusive Bigfoot . READ MORE: Stranded driver claims he was 'harassed' by 'Russian Bigfoot' in eerie footage They only noticed the possible Bigfoot some days after the clip was recorded. The hosts of US TV show Finding Bigfoot visited the camp site to investigate the footage. "Whatever it is, it is fast. I don't think a person will be able to run that fast," Bigfoot researcher Cliff Barackman said on the show. Analysing the clip further on his website, Cliff notes how the figure is " too tall to be something like a black bear running … [Read more...] about Two boys accidentally film ‘Bigfoot’ while making marshmallow s’mores tutorial video

Exclusive extract from Amber Gill’s debut novel, Until I Met You
Until I Met You is Amber Gill’s first novel for romantic publishers Mills & Boon . It follows Samantha on what was supposed to be the holiday of a lifetime with the imminent launch of her travel blog, her best friend’s wedding and – hopefully – her own marriage proposal. Until she finds herself on her way to Tobago – single. Read on for an exclusive peek at the opening of the novel. ‘Ladies and gentlemen, this is the pre-boarding announcement for flight BA209 to Miami, Florida. At this time we ask passenger Samantha Roberts to proceed to the British Airways check-in desk. Passenger Samantha Roberts, please proceed to the check-in desk.’ The insistent monotone roused Samantha from her meditation. She hopped to her feet, grabbed the handle of her carry-on suitcase and made a beeline for the desk. Tall, curvy, with cinnamon brown skin and a head of wild corkscrew curls, she stood out in most crowds. But the Heathrow departure gate was packed. She had to elbow … [Read more...] about Exclusive extract from Amber Gill’s debut novel, Until I Met You
Call Of Duty: Black Ops 5 and Warzone maps leaked by Activision
A dataminer has turned up new images from not only Modern Warfare 2 but 2024’s game as well – which seem to be set during the Gulf War. At some point, game makers are going to have to learn not to stuff their online updates full of secret information. Between that and job ads that reveal things they’d never admit in public, the best source of video game leaks is usually the publisher themselves. Fortnite leaks, for example, are almost never from an inside source but a dataminer combing through the latest update. And so is the case with the latest info on Call Of Duty, including the first ever look at the 2024 game. A series of 10 images, that appear to be concept art or loading screens, were discovered in the files of the alpha for the new Call Of Duty Mobile and they offer a first look at not just Modern Warfare 2’s maps but those of the 2024 Call Of Duty game, which seems to be Black Ops 5. Why on earth the files are in the code for a mobile game is a question … [Read more...] about Call Of Duty: Black Ops 5 and Warzone maps leaked by Activision
Tuesday evening UK news briefing: Rishi Sunak and Sajid Javid resign from the Cabinet
Rishi Sunak has quit as Chancellor and Sajid Javid has resigned as health secretary as Boris Johnson's leadership faced a fresh crisis following the Chris Pincher scandal. Mr Sunak said "the public rightly expect government to be conducted properly, competently and seriously", adding "I believe these standards are worth fighting for and that is why I am resigning." In an incendiary letter, Mr Javid said the British people "expect integrity from their government" but voters now believed Mr Johnson's administration was neither competent nor "acting in the national interest". Mr Johnson had tonight admitted "it was a mistake" to give Mr Pincher his job as deputy chief whip and said: "I apologise for it". Mr Sunak and Mr Javid's resignations come after Downing Street was accused of lying over the Chris Pincher scandal this morning, as Lord McDonald said Mr Johnson was briefed "in person" about concerns relating to the then Foreign Office minister. The publication of the … [Read more...] about Tuesday evening UK news briefing: Rishi Sunak and Sajid Javid resign from the Cabinet

Why communicating over Slack has got us all using language we’d never use in real life
Ever find yourself typing things to work colleagues that you would never say in real life? ‘Fab. Sounds perf! Thanks sooo much! *smiley emoji*’ You are very much not alone. As we settle into almost two years of widespread remote working, many people still haven’t met their workmates in person , and the way that we communicate is changing. While there are many benefits of working from home, months of spending the days at a makeshift desk, in an empty room – with the main form of colleague communication being via Slack, or other forms of instant messaging – have started to take their toll. Yes, we might have the odd Zoom call, but primarily communicating through the written word has become commonplace. And this has consequences on how we talk to one another. Before, in our pre-pandemic lives, a colleague could ask a question such as ‘have you emailed so-and-so?’, over a desk, as part of an ongoing dialogue. You could then have either answered, ‘yeah’, or ‘not … [Read more...] about Why communicating over Slack has got us all using language we’d never use in real life
